6 Reasons Why Having a Big Family is Amazing

When people find out I have six children, their reactions are often priceless. Sure, there are moments when I question my choices, fret over the world they’ll inherit, or ponder the environmental impact of a large family. However, most of the time, I revel in the joy of having six kids. Here are a few reasons why it’s truly fantastic:

1. Cost-Effective Parenting

A few years back, during the economic downturn, I was asked whether it would change my mind about having another child. My answer? Absolutely not! I refuse to let common sense, birth control, or economic woes dictate my family size. In my experience, the expense of raising children is largely determined by your choices. Yes, the first child requires an initial investment, but with each additional child, you get more value for your money. Our well-loved bassinet, worn stroller, and stained crib have served us well, and hand-me-downs from older siblings mean my little ones barely know what “new” clothes feel like. While college expenses may loom large, we have sensible savings plans in place, and I believe in teaching my kids the value of hard work through summer jobs and student loans. Affording kids is all about perspective; I may not have a luxury car, but I can certainly provide for my six children.

2. Kind-Hearted Kids

It’s a common perception that children from larger families tend to be more compassionate. While it’s a stereotype, I have my own theories. One reason is that it’s nearly impossible to spoil them. Unlike smaller families, where one child can be showered with gifts, my kids share everything. If I catered to their every whim, I’d never get a moment’s peace. My six-year-old has been making her own breakfast for as long as I can remember, and the older siblings often help the younger ones. This independence fosters kindness and sharing, which is often recognized by others as “niceness.”

3. Sleep? What Sleep?

Let’s be honest—once you have kids, sleep is a luxury you can forget about. You’re already navigating a life filled with sleepless nights, a lack of social outings, and the constant need for snacks. Bringing in a couple more kids won’t drastically change that. If you’ve managed the transition from one to two children, you can handle any additional chaos. Sure, there are trying moments, but the rewards of family life far outweigh the challenges.

4. Built-In Playmates

The phrase “I’m bored” is a rarity in my household. My kids have a built-in entertainment system, always surrounded by their siblings. They bicker, of course, but they also find creative ways to entertain themselves for hours without needing my involvement. While I enjoy engaging in activities with them, the idea of playing endless rounds of dolls doesn’t appeal to me anymore. My kids thrive in their fun-filled environment, and their days are packed with imaginative play.

5. Social Skills Galore

Having a child with autism has highlighted the importance of social interaction for me. My eldest, who faces challenges in communication and social skills, has three younger sisters who naturally engage him in play and conversation. He’s immersed in a world of sibling interaction, ensuring he learns to navigate social situations. While I didn’t plan for a big family because of his needs, it has undoubtedly provided him with invaluable opportunities for growth and learning.

6. Who Needs a Retirement Home?

That’s right! With six children, I have a built-in support system for my golden years. They can take turns looking after me, and I might even playfully exaggerate a few ailments as a little payback for all those years of diaper duty. They should consider themselves fortunate—I won’t have to juggle three little ones in diapers at once!
