Why I Appreciate Your Untidy Home

Recently, I took my two kids to visit a friend’s house before heading off to work. As she opened the door, she graciously said, “Please excuse the chaos.” I glanced around and saw toys, books, and blocks scattered across the living room, a familiar sight for any parent. It was a scene I recognized all too well from my own home.

I can’t speak for my friend, but when I say “excuse the chaos,” it often stems from my own feelings of embarrassment or self-consciousness. It’s the phrase I utter when I feel a bit queasy about guests seeing my neglected chores. I picture other people’s immaculate homes—even behind the toilets (let’s be real, that’s a tough spot to clean!).

While my friend exuded confidence and composure, maybe she felt a twinge of self-doubt, just like many of us do. But here’s what I truly felt when I arrived: overwhelming gratitude that she was willing to look after my children while I focused on my writing career. I cherished having another adult to converse with, and I knew her boys would brighten my kids’ day with their playful antics. No amount of clutter could diminish my appreciation for her.

Upon stepping inside, I felt a sense of belonging. She was inviting me into her world, chaos and all. The individuals I am closest to are those who see me at my most unguarded—whether it’s in my sweats, with messy hair, or surrounded by unwashed dishes. I long to create that kind of openness with others, but if I’m honest, my pride often gets in the way. It builds walls of so-called “protection” that keep out anyone who might judge my disheveled home or my post-pregnancy figure. It’s silly, but it’s the reality.

When another mother lowers her defenses around me and allows me to witness her untidy home, it feels like a sincere compliment. I am honored and wish she knew just how much I respect and admire her for it. So, to all the moms out there: if you invite me over and your home is a bit chaotic, know that you’re in good company. There’s no need for shame; we’ve all been there.
