As we approach the New Year, many of us start thinking about resolutions. I recently saw a friend share her ambitious list of goals: read 65 books, swim every Tuesday night, and tackle a recipe from each of her cookbooks. I couldn’t help but chuckle. Sure, these are great aspirations, but let’s be honest—having kids changes the game completely.
Let’s break down some of those lofty ambitions. Reading 65 books? Oh, I’d love to have that kind of time! The reality is, my reading consists mostly of the same half-dozen picture books my son insists on revisiting multiple times a day. And swimming on a regular schedule? The closest I’ve come to that is accidentally taking a dive into the tub while juggling my phone and my son’s bath toys—it’s called multitasking, right?
Cooking from every cookbook? If only they had cookbooks dedicated to mac and cheese, peanut butter toast, and pizza. Because I’ve mastered those dishes about five thousand times over! And organizing one room a month? Ha! I can barely manage to clear off the dining table before dinner, let alone declutter an entire room. If organizing means cramming everything into the closet just before guests arrive, then count me in!
It’s clear that my friend, whom I adore, doesn’t have kids—nor does she need to. Her resolutions are delightful, but they simply don’t fit into my life as a mom. So, I pondered: what resolutions can I realistically set for myself in this season of motherhood? Here’s what I came up with:
- Take a shower every day: Clean hair is supposed to be a good thing, right? Of course, this would require waking up early enough before the kids and dog start their morning demands. So, maybe I’ll aim for showering every other day instead. That seems more doable.
- Dress better: I bet my husband would appreciate me ditching the yoga pants for something nicer. But let’s be real—I’ll need to find non-stretchy bottoms that fit comfortably after the holiday indulgences. Maybe I’ll save this one for after the stomach flu hits again… or next year.
- Drink more water: Hydration is essential for health. Luckily, water comes in many forms. And since Jesus turned water into wine, I guess I just need to drink more wine. So, that one is officially checked off!
- Exercise six days a week: Let’s face it—this isn’t happening. So scratch that idea.
Ultimately, instead of adhering to rigid resolutions that may not fit my lifestyle, I think I’ll resolve to be content with who I am and what I’m doing. Because in this chaotic yet fulfilling journey of motherhood, I’m doing just fine.

Simple commitments like showering regularly, dressing better, and staying hydrated can bring a sense of accomplishment. Ultimately, embracing who you are in this parenting journey is what truly matters.
