Parenting has certainly evolved since the days when I had three little ones at home. While I sometimes reminisce about the sweet baby scents, tiny toes, and those adorable crinkly faces, I’ve come to realize that having teenagers comes with its own unique set of blessings. Sure, they may have a reputation for being moody and a bit messy (and let’s not even talk about their questionable hygiene), but they also bring so much joy, laughter, and insight into my life. Here are ten reasons I’m thankful for my teenage kids:
- No More Waking the Sleeping Baby
The saying “sleeping like a baby” is misleading. Babies wake up constantly, while teenagers? They could sleep through a tornado. Whether it’s doorbells, phone calls, or even me shouting their names, nothing seems to stir them from their slumber. - They Keep Me in the Loop
Remember the “cool mom” from that classic movie? While I don’t quite ask my kids for the latest gossip, they do provide me with a glimpse into what’s trending. Thanks to them, I was the only one who knew Gavin DeGraw was on stage with Billy Joel, and I didn’t confuse him with Gwen Stefani. - Longer Dinner Dates
Gone are the days of shoving my food down in a hurry. Now, I can enjoy a full meal in peace while my teenagers sit through appetizers, main courses, and dessert—without turning into a wailing mess! - No More Kids’ Shows
While I have fond memories of characters like Elmo and Barney, I don’t miss the repetitive soundtracks of their shows. Now, I can enjoy more mature entertainment without the need for cartoons at all hours. - Less Germ Exposure
During their preschool years, my kids were like magnets for every illness out there. Now that they’re older, they seem to have outgrown that phase, and I’m thankful for fewer visits to the pediatrician for sniffles and stomach bugs. - Brutally Honest Feedback
Need a fashion consultant? Your teenager is your best bet. They won’t hesitate to tell you if something doesn’t look right, and trust me, if they compliment you, it’s genuine. Just don’t be surprised if they “borrow” your clothes! - In-House Tech Support
Need help with your gadgets? My teens are my go-to tech support team, ready to fix my computer, download new apps, and even guide me through the world of emojis. Thanks to them, I’ve discovered new games to enjoy while waiting in the carpool line. - They Can Drive
It was nerve-wracking at first, watching my daughter take the wheel alone. But as she gained confidence, I’ve relished the freedom of not being a constant chauffeur, especially on those chilly nights. - Reach for the High Shelf
It’s a strange feeling when you realize your child has outgrown you. But having a tall teenager around is a blessing when it comes to reaching those high shelves, making tasks around the house a lot easier. - Stimulating Conversations
My teenagers challenge me to think critically about current events and their opinions on various topics. Helping with homework has reawakened knowledge that had been dormant for years, and their perspectives often make me reconsider my views.
While the early years of parenting are filled with delightful moments, the teenage years offer a different kind of connection. I cherish the times we spend together, whether attending a Broadway show or discussing the latest movie adaptations. As Rick from Casablanca famously said, “I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship.” If you’re interested in more parenting insights, check out this post on Cervical Insemination for further reading. In summary, while raising teens comes with its challenges, the rewards are abundant. They offer insights, laughter, and a connection that deepens as they grow. Embrace the journey!
