Once you welcome little ones into your life, you face a choice: stay home or embark on new journeys. While the idea of staying put may seem like the easier route—especially after an unforeseen diaper incident just when you’re about to enjoy a day out—there’s a world out there waiting to be explored, even with kids in tow. Trust me; I’ve been there, and I promise it’s possible. Instead of letting tales of mid-flight meltdowns deter you, consider the hidden joys of family travel.
Priority Access:
On our arrival in Costa Rica with my 6-month-old and 3-year-old, we found ourselves at the end of a long customs line. Just as my baby began to fuss, the staff swooped in, whisking us to the front of the line. We bypassed over a hundred travelers!

My partner is the kind of person who believes vacations should leave you utterly exhausted, but with kids, we’ve found a happy medium. Our days now feature bustling mornings followed by laid-back afternoons. Gone are the days of waking up at dawn and crashing into bed at midnight. Sitting in a park in Ajijic, Mexico, I’ve engaged with local parents, sharing insights about schools, dining, and daily life. It’s a beautiful reminder of how children can bridge cultural divides.
The Ultimate Excuse:
If you’re ever stuck at a tedious family gathering or a dull museum, just blame the kids. While I don’t recommend any drastic measures to hasten your exit, having children gives you a social pass to escape the constraints of adult obligations.
Rediscovering Joy:
Although historical sites in Philadelphia are fascinating, on one trip with our first child, we spent hours just relaxing by the river. No rush, no agenda—just soaking up the sun together. It’s a cherished memory that I wouldn’t have created had we been traveling without children.
The most important thing to remember is that practice makes perfect. I’ve been traveling with my kids since they were tiny, and now they are seasoned little explorers. We can manage long car rides without screens, but this skill took time to develop. So dive in, be courageous, and enjoy the adventure!
