When I first shared my experience with bullying on my blog, I was taken aback by the overwhelming response. I poured my heart out about the feelings of violation, worthlessness, and the deep sense of helplessness that consumed me. Those emotions nearly drove me to a tragic decision. The truth is, many people were aware of my struggles. I could sense the glances, hear the laughter, and feel the indifference from those around me. It was as if a neon target was painted on my back, while my suffering remained unseen. I reached out for help from teachers and school staff, but my cries for assistance fell on deaf ears. If they didn’t witness the bullying, they claimed there was nothing they could do.
I was desperate for help, but it felt like my voice was lost in a void. If only I had known then what I know now—I should have found the courage to speak up. I should have confronted those who bullied me, making sure their actions were known to everyone present. I should have demanded accountability from those who stood by and did nothing. I should have challenged the school’s stance that intervention required witnessing the act firsthand. Instead, I let my despair silence me.
Today, I understand the importance of addressing threats head-on. It doesn’t always mean reacting with anger; sometimes, a calm and assertive approach is all it takes to reclaim your power. Whether it’s unfriending toxic people on social media or choosing to walk away from negativity, I now prioritize my mental well-being. While I won’t hesitate to raise my voice when necessary, I have made a vow to never again be a victim of bullying.
Schools must take bullying seriously. My old high school tries, but not every institution is committed to this cause. There needs to be a universal understanding that bullying is a serious issue that requires proactive measures. Schools should not only acknowledge bullying but also be held accountable for their responses—or lack thereof.
I’ve promised myself to be brave for both my sake and for others. If we collectively stand against bullying and show support for those affected, we can make a significant impact. It really is that simple: we just need to #BeBrave.
