My son celebrated his eighth birthday this week. At the end of an incredible family day, I gathered him and his five-year-old sister for a quick chat before bedtime. My son was already aware of the tragic events surrounding George Floyd and understood the widespread outrage that followed. However, I felt the need to address something more pressing.
I asked them how they thought the public learned about what happened to Mr. Floyd. Without hesitation, my son responded, “Because someone filmed it.”
I explained that, unfortunately, there’s a possibility we could encounter someone like the officer involved in George Floyd’s case. I told them that if I were ever stopped by the police and my wife wasn’t around, I would discreetly hand my phone to them so they could record any interactions.
Taking my son’s hand, I asked, “Do you understand how important this is?” He met my gaze and nodded solemnly, as if he were carrying a significant responsibility, not just as a boy who turned eight this week.
Throughout my life, I’ve dedicated myself to protecting others, whether in hospitals, courtrooms, or on battlefields. It’s deeply unsettling to think that my children might have to take on this role for me. Yet, my wife and I — like many parents of color — feel compelled to prepare them for these situations. We know that our accomplishments do not shield us from the threats of police violence or racial injustice, and that simply having a video may not guarantee safety.
Though my son may not be able to physically protect me, he might just help safeguard my dignity and ensure justice is served in my name.
