Marriage Is Full of Blunders and Chuckles

To cherish and to hold, from this day forth, for better or worse, in abundance or scarcity, in health or sickness, until death do us part. Nearly a decade ago, Jake and I exchanged these vows. Yet, I can hardly remember that day.

At the time, I was 25, the last of my friends to walk down the aisle (excluding my friend who tied the knot at 30 while deep in medical studies). We recited those sacred words and embarked on our journey together.

Fast forward ten years…

Jake: Where are my white dress shirt and suit pants?
Me: I have no idea.

(Pause)

Me: When was the last time you wore them?
Jake: Last year.

Utterly shocked, I couldn’t help but poke fun at him like the supportive partner that I am.

Me: I’m not the Keeper of All Things—I’m just one person! How can you not know where your pants are? You haven’t worn them in ten months! Ugh, we should find a church and start attending. It’s beneficial for the kids. Let’s just pick one! They need to learn Bible stories, and I keep forgetting to teach them because I’m too busy keeping everyone alive. The only ones I can recall are about Adam and Eve and the Christmas Story. Why are you laughing?!

Jake is incredibly patient, and he let me finish my rant before suggesting I check the dry cleaner’s to see if I had forgotten to pick up his clothes—a nearly year-old oversight.

“Well… okay,” I replied. “But I usually keep up with that stuff.”

Oh, karma has a funny way of biting back. After three days of searching high and low for Jake’s suit pants, I decided to drop by our old dry cleaner—the one I avoid because it’s so far away—on a whim.

As soon as I pulled in, the clerk burst into laughter. My cheeks flushed as embarrassment washed over me, leaving me feeling utterly bewildered.

“Hi, Mrs. Johnson! I knew you’d come back! I kept telling my boss not to give your stuff away!” he exclaimed as I collected everything our family—yes, all five of us—wore for Christmas photos nearly a year ago.

Apparently, I wasn’t the only one oblivious to the missing clothes.

That, my friends, is marriage.
