The Most Cringe-Worthy Baby Shower Invitation: Weight Comments Are Never Okay

When it comes to celebrating pregnancy, one would hope for invitations that uplift and honor the journey. Yet, a recent baby shower invitation has surfaced that does quite the opposite, and it’s shaking heads everywhere. A friend tipped me off to this gem on the e-invitation platform, Paperless Post, and I couldn’t believe my eyes.

“She’s Not Fat, She’s Pregnant!” Seriously? This invitation seems to think it’s a funny jab, but ultimately serves as a reminder of the societal pressures women face regarding their bodies. Just imagine the relief—thank goodness we cleared that up! For a second, we were all worried about her weight gain.

Upon further inspection, I discovered that this invitation was designed by none other than a male Editor-At-Large for a prominent women’s fashion magazine. Really? Is fat-shaming women in their most vulnerable moments now part of the fashion industry’s repertoire? It’s hard to fathom why anyone would think this is acceptable, let alone a good idea for a baby shower.

The envelope doesn’t do much to help either. Instead of the usual cute motifs like baby booties or bottles, we’re greeted with a measuring tape design. I mean, why not add a dash of body shaming to the mix? It’s baffling to think that the hostess of this shower wouldn’t face backlash from every other woman in attendance. Is everyone in her circle a size two? Because this invitation is about as inclusive as a high school cafeteria. If I received this, it would be going straight into the shredder.

I get it, it’s just an invitation, right? But it’s more than that. Women are scrutinized constantly, and comments about their bodies—especially during pregnancy—can be exhausting. It cuts to the core when something meant to celebrate motherhood ends up perpetuating negative body image.
