5 Reasons Why I Can’t Possibly Exercise Right Now

As a parent, I often find myself contemplating the idea of exercise. Sure, I know the endorphins will make me feel like I can conquer the world, but in reality, the thought of working out often gets drowned out by a flurry of excuses. Here are five reasons why hitting the gym or even doing a simple workout at home just isn’t in the cards for me right now:

  1. I Just Showered.
Let’s be real here: the effort involved in getting a peaceful shower is monumental. Between dodging interruptions and negotiating bathroom time with tiny humans, squeezing in a second shower feels like trying to break a world record. I mean, “Mom Who Showered Twice in One Day” is not a title anyone’s ever claimed, right?
  2. I’m Definitely About to Start My Period.
Oh, the joys of womanhood! Just when I think I might be able to squeeze in a workout, a twinge in my abdomen reminds me that Aunt Flo is lurking around the corner. I’m almost convinced that there’s some sort of unwritten rule that says exercising during your period leads to weight gain. I’d rather wait until next week when all the hormonal chaos has calmed down.
  3. It’s Pouring Outside.
My go-to workout is running, and it’s one of those activities that’s supposed to be liberating and invigorating. But when rain hits, my enthusiasm plummets. Climbing into soggy clothes and dragging around wet fabric is not my idea of fun. Plus, who wants to risk trench foot? I’ve seen those documentaries; they never end well.
  4. My Stomach is in Revolt.
There’s nothing quite like the gurgling sound from your belly that hints at an impending bathroom emergency. The last thing I want while running is to be caught off guard by my digestive system. Even if I can hold off a bathroom visit, I have a sneaking suspicion that an unexpected sprint might lead to an unfortunate situation.
  5. My Kid is Super Clingy.
You know those cute videos of moms doing yoga with their kids? Yeah, that’s not happening here. If I attempt to stretch out on the floor, my little one is immediately on top of me, demanding snacks or asking why I’m not playing with her. I need a distraction-free zone to unleash my frustrations and maybe let out some colorful language during those dreaded squats.

If you’re feeling the pressure to exercise from your overly enthusiastic friends, feel free to borrow some of these excuses. Alternatively, come hang out at my place where the only heavy lifting involves transferring snacks from the bowl to my mouth. It’s a workout of its own, I swear!

In summary, while I know the benefits of exercise, the reasons I choose to avoid it often outweigh the motivation. Whether it’s the weather, my period, or just my child’s endless need for attention, I’m finding plenty of ways to justify skipping the workout today.
