My Son’s Challenge to Kindness: A Call to Action

“Mom, why can’t everyone just be kind?”

This heartfelt question arose after a routine visit to the dentist for my son’s semi-annual checkup. Our family is fortunate to be surrounded by wonderful people, yet sometimes, we encounter those whose words and actions can sting. When venturing out, you never know how others might respond.

At the dentist’s office, we are greeted by a team of compassionate professionals who go above and beyond to ensure that my son, who is on the spectrum, feels comfortable. Although I anticipated a warm welcome, I was unprepared for the extraordinary kindness we experienced that day.

Just moments after our arrival, a kind woman resembling a nurturing grandmother entered the waiting area. With a radiant smile, she introduced herself and asked if she could chat with my son. Surprised, I nodded, and watched in amazement as this lovely lady engaged him effortlessly. Ignoring his fidgety movements, she posed the perfect questions about his interests—his favorite games, recent Lego creations, preferred foods, and even his favorite Marvel superhero. I instinctively reached out to give him our reassuring shoulder pat, a signal to calm down, but the lady gently stopped me, saying it was wonderful to see him so happy.

After a delightful conversation, she informed my son it was time for his cleaning. As they walked away, she leaned in and whispered, “It’s okay. My grandson has autism too. Aren’t they just the sweetest?” Her words were a balm to my heart, and as she left, I felt uplifted.

On the way home, my son asked again, “Mom, why can’t everyone be kind?” The kindness from this stranger profoundly affected him, inspiring him to urge me to spread the message that everyone deserves kindness and acknowledgment.

What If We All Committed to Kindness?

What if we all committed to showing kindness and grace to those around us? What if we used our own experiences to uplift others? What if we became the ones who offer hope to those struggling?

What if we chose to express love to those who may not reciprocate? What if we took the time to encourage someone who desperately needs a positive word? What if we smiled at strangers instead of rushing through our day? What if we lent a helping hand to a parent calming a distressed child or to someone in crutches juggling heavy packages?

Simply put, what if we intentionally practiced kindness?

We’ve all felt the sting of unkind words and actions—some deliberate, others thoughtless. Conversely, we’ve also experienced the warmth of kindness, which can heal wounds we didn’t know we carried. The difference between these experiences can shape our lives profoundly.

Those of us grappling with the additional challenges of illness or disabilities, or caring for loved ones in similar situations, often feel we have little left to give. Yet, if we take a moment to remember how someone else’s kindness impacted us, it may help us tap into an inner strength we didn’t realize we had. Life’s trials can lead us to unexpected depths of endurance and compassion.

My son has issued a kindness challenge. He believes that each person matters and deserves kindness. I’m accepting this challenge—will you join us?
