Sorry Kids, You Just Won’t Get It

Sure, growing up in the 21st century has its perks, but I can’t help but feel a tinge of sympathy for my kids. They’ll never get to relish some of the childhood experiences that defined my youth:

Arcades

Long before gaming consoles and smartphones took over, there were local arcades. These magical hubs of entertainment were where a quarter could launch you into a world of fun, and your initials were proudly displayed next to your high score.

UHF Channels

The only silver lining to being home sick was the chance to binge-watch a plethora of quirky black-and-white sitcoms on those lesser-known channels. The static and poor reception only added to their charm.

Love Letters

A hastily typed text message can’t compare to a heartfelt love letter, one that you read and folded countless times, stowing it away in a shoebox in your teenage room.

Surprise Parties

With social media and group chats, it’s nearly impossible to pull off a genuine surprise party these days. Everyone seems to know everything before it even happens.

Battle of the Network Stars

Where else could you witness Mr. T and Mr. Drummond paddling inflatable canoes against each other? That was reality TV at its most entertaining.

Deciphering Song Lyrics

Back in the day, figuring out the lyrics to your favorite songs meant replaying them endlessly. Arguing with friends about whether the words were “I’m a desk, I’m a desk” or “Amadeus, Amadeus” provided endless laughs.

The Fat Envelope

Nowadays, colleges notify you of your acceptance via email, which lacks the excitement of receiving that hefty envelope in the mail.

ABC Afterschool Specials

While there are many places to learn about serious issues like anorexia and drug use, nothing captures the essence of 80s television quite like these cheesy, dramatic specials.

Crossing Off Days on a Calendar

My kids have countdown apps for their big events, but I doubt it brings the same thrill as crossing off each day in red pen until summer vacation.

Waiting for Your Favorite Song on the Radio

Before the era of streaming, if you didn’t own the cassette, you had to wait for the radio to play your favorite track. If you were desperate, you might even call the station to request it.

Limited Edition Glasses at McDonald’s

Remember the thrill of collecting those glasses and the sibling rivalry over who got to drink from the Hamburglar cup?

Schoolhouse Rock

There was no better way to learn multiplication or the preamble to the Constitution (minus a few words for timing) than through these catchy educational songs.

The Way-Back of a Station Wagon

Riding in the way-back was like a mini adventure. Where else could you combine a grocery run with a fun ride?

The Love Boat

Before reality competition shows took over, this was the place to see Hollywood’s has-beens and B-listers mingle. Meet me on the lido deck!

Now, I think it’s time to dig out my oversized Benetton sweater and find a Brady Bunch marathon on TV Land. Who knows, I might just convince the kids to join me for a trip down memory lane.
