When Jennifer Martinez graduated from the University of California, San Diego, she wanted to pay tribute to her hardworking parents, both of whom are migrant farm workers. For her graduation photos, she chose the farm fields near Coachella, California, where her family has toiled for years.
Photographer Alex Torres captured stunning images that highlight the immigrant journey and the often unrecognized efforts of migrant laborers in the United States. UC San Diego shared Jennifer’s heartfelt message on their social media, in which she honored her parents, Roberto and Maria, who continue to work in the fields. “My parents always emphasized the importance of higher education. They told me that to truly understand this, I needed to experience the labor they put in as migrant workers,” she reflected.
Jennifer recounted her experiences working in the fields after school. “I would rush from cross country practice, run for miles, and then get picked up by my dad to go work overnight in the fields. We would plant strawberries and finish around 2 or 3 a.m., then wake up at 5 a.m. to catch the bus,” she shared.
She expressed admiration for her fellow workers, who endure physical hardships while toiling under the sun. “People often overlook the effort that goes into the food they purchase. Behind every vegetable is someone who breaks their back every day in the fields,” she said.
Even while attending college and holding a job on campus, Jennifer continued working in the fields. Balancing her studies, job, and long commute was challenging, but she persevered. “There were many times I wanted to quit, but my parents’ support kept me going,” she noted.
Reflecting on her upbringing, Jennifer stated, “Going back to the fields shaped who I am today. My dad taught us that without higher education, we would end up stuck in the same situation.” She credits her parents for her strong work ethic and motivation to succeed. Now, she has proudly earned a bachelor’s degree in sociology, making her family proud.
