This feature, available starting today, lets individuals choose whether to display the number of likes on their own content as well as on others’ posts. This new option is entirely voluntary, so if you prefer to see your like count increase, you can continue doing so. Adam Mosseri, Instagram’s head, emphasized that this change is designed to improve the platforms. “We want you to feel good about the time you spend on our apps and this is a way to give you more control over your experience,” he shared on Twitter.
The idea for this feature has been under consideration since around 2019. In a blog post on Instagram’s website, the company expressed its desire to “depressurize” users’ time on the app. They noted that feedback from users and experts indicated that not seeing like counts was helpful for some, while others found it frustrating as they often rely on likes to gauge trends or popularity. Hence, the choice was introduced.
Interestingly, Instagram unintentionally launched this feature for all users back in March, resulting in mixed reactions. Some users embraced the change, hoping it would encourage more genuine sharing, while others questioned the essence of social media without the acknowledgment from peers.

How to Hide Likes
To try out this feature on your own post, simply click on the post, tap the three dots in the upper right corner, and select the option to hide likes. To conceal likes on others’ posts, navigate to Settings and find the option under “New Posts.”
