No mother escapes the baby and toddler years without sacrificing a good night’s sleep. When you’re running on empty, you may find yourself just getting by—feeding the baby, changing diapers, and maybe even tackling a bill or two. But let’s face it, you’re not exactly thriving. Mistakes are inevitable. Recently, I polled my supportive mom group, and we shared some of the most ridiculous things we’ve done due to exhaustion. Here are nine of the craziest blunders that moms often make when sleep-deprived.
- Language Mix-ups: You might find yourself in a verbal jumble, saying things like, “Okay, bye! See you yesterday!” or “Excuse me, I’m going upstairs to eat the baby.” You may even ask another mom how old her baby was when he was born.
- Shoe Shenanigans: Forgetting your shoes is one thing, but leaving the house in mismatched footwear or even your cozy slippers is another. You may be so exhausted that you just roll with it, even showing up to a meeting in your fuzzy bunny slip-ons.
- Fashion Faux Pas: You might venture out in your pajamas or struggle to put on a dress, blaming its snug fit on weight gain. You could even inadvertently wear a dress backward for an entire event, like my friend did at a concert. Or you may try to wear your five-year-old’s underwear, which is a feat even I couldn’t manage.
- Coffee Catastrophes: You could find yourself brewing a pot of coffee without any grounds, wondering why it’s just hot water. Or you might pour coffee grinds straight into your cup, bypassing the coffee maker altogether—only to realize you’re now eating grit. Forgetting to turn the machine on is just adding insult to injury.
- Sensory Blunders: You might say, “Where’s the baby carrier? I want to pack it for our trip,” while wearing it and holding the baby simultaneously.
- Memory Lapses: Standing in the living room with a piece of dental floss in your hand, you could be left wondering why you even picked it up in the first place, having long abandoned any hope of flossing.
- Laundry Mishaps: You may throw a load in the washer only to forget the soap, or toss clothes into the dryer without turning it on. Don’t even get me started on putting a bag of groceries—olive oil and vinegar included—through a wash cycle.
- Time Confusion: You might glance at the clock to time a feeding, only to have no idea which way the hands are moving.
- Name Mix-ups: You may find yourself calling your friends by their kids’ names or confusing your children with their siblings. A friend of mine even sang a lullaby to her baby but completely blanked on the baby’s name.
