In perhaps the most heartwarming tale of the pandemic, two individuals in their 90s found love in a retirement community. Amidst the challenges of lockdown, they formed a connection that led them to sneak into each other’s rooms, reminiscent of youthful romance.
“It felt just like I was a college student sneaking into the girls’ dorm!” chuckled Tom Baker, 98. Tom and Lily Carter, 91, began their relationship when the pandemic took hold. Tom had recently relocated to the Maplewood Retirement Community in Freehold, New Jersey, where he reconnected with Lily. The two had previously met years ago over a game of bridge.
Before moving to Maplewood, Tom experienced the loss of his wife, Mary, after 75 years of marriage. Lily, on the other hand, had been widowed in 2001 when her husband, Frank, passed away.
“As we spent more time together, Lily’s beautiful smile and youthful spirit drew me closer,” Tom shared. “We became much closer than we were before, enjoying dinners together and discovering many shared interests.”
However, when lockdown measures were implemented, their socializing was restricted.
“We were confined to our apartments,” Tom explained.
But that didn’t deter their budding romance.
“Were you sneaking around?” the reporter inquired, to which Lily confessed, “We certainly were. He would come to my apartment, and I would visit his.”
According to reports, Tom would discreetly use the elevator to travel between floors to see Lily, and vice versa. It wasn’t long before they were caught, leading to a significant decision: remain apart or quarantine together. Naturally, they chose to stay together, and Lily moved into Tom’s apartment.
“The security guard told me, ‘You can either live separately or together, but you need to decide now,’” Tom recalled. “I quickly packed my clothes and a toothbrush and moved in the very next day,” Lily said, admitting it was a bit of an adjustment. However, she soon adapted to Tom’s swimming routine and even joined him for laps.
“He swims eight laps,” Lily noted. “It’s great for his health,” Tom added.
More than a year later, the couple remains as joyful as ever. “Their love story is a testament to resilience during tough times,” said Maplewood’s Executive Director, Mark Jones. “They exhibit youthful exuberance and are always ready for fun.” Tom describes Lily as “so warm-hearted” and “young at heart,” expressing that he can’t imagine life without her. “She has brought new joy into my life after my wife’s passing,” he said. “It’s never too late for love, even in your 90s.”
