I have to express my frustration with Samantha Lee, a former reality TV star, after her recent body-shaming incident on social media. I’m not saying this as a fan of Rachel Green; in fact, I haven’t followed their lives since their show ended. They could be the most charitable people around or just downright unpleasant. Either way, my feelings on this latest Instagram drama remain unchanged.
What Samantha did is simply appalling. It’s not just about who she targeted, but as a compassionate person, I can’t stand by and let body shaming go unchallenged—regardless of the recipient.
The Scoop
So, here’s the scoop: Samantha took to her Instagram story to share photos of her brother, Ryan, and his wife, Rachel, enjoying a day at the beach. Interestingly enough, they reportedly have a strained relationship and rarely communicate. Samantha has publicly criticized Rachel and Ryan before, so it’s puzzling why she would post about them at all. But that’s a different story.
In one of her posts featuring Rachel in a bikini, Samantha wrote, “Yay Rachel’s pregnant! I hope she has a little girl this time. Cute bump.” Commenting on someone’s body is already inappropriate, but considering Rachel has openly expressed her desire for a second child for a couple of years, it adds an extra layer of insensitivity. If she’s not pregnant, it might be due to various personal circumstances, and it’s simply not anyone’s business. For her sister-in-law to mock her appearance is just tasteless.
Samantha also shared a shirtless photo of Ryan, jokingly asking, “I wonder what my brother’s having.”
Oh, Samantha. How original! Body shaming is not clever or funny.
Fans of Ryan and Rachel alerted them to Samantha’s announcement before they could respond, prompting Ryan to clarify that “Rachel is not pregnant. Just being body shamed.”
The Impact of Body Shaming
While discussing their physical appearances might seem tempting, the truth is that body shaming is never acceptable. Especially from a family member, regardless of their relationship status.
To inflict emotional harm on someone, Samantha chose to target their bodies. Why? Perhaps it’s because she lacks creativity and kindness. Unfortunately, body shaming is a common issue that society often overlooks.
When it comes to celebrities, some may argue they ask for scrutiny because of their fame. They might reference Rachel’s previous decisions regarding cosmetic enhancements or their behavior in the past to justify their attacks. But that’s not right. Regardless of their character, body shaming is a form of abuse, and nobody deserves it.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: body shaming is not acceptable for anyone, celebrity or otherwise. If you stoop to this level, you’re part of the problem.
