From The Confessional: My Partner Is Obsessed With Video Games

Raise your hand if the sight of your partner engrossed in video games drives you crazy. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with gaming—especially during a year of isolation, right? Video games have entertained many of us, from adults to kids, and they have evolved tremendously since the ’90s. But what’s definitely not cool is feeling neglected by a partner who seems addicted to their screen. How many times can we nudge them to take out the trash, do laundry, or just pay attention to us while they’re fixated on their imaginary sports teams?

Many moms are fed up with watching their partners play video games when they should be tending to responsibilities. During the pandemic, I lost both of my jobs, and my mother was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer. My partner is glued to their console, and I’m at my breaking point. I’m exhausted and overwhelmed.

Confessions of a Frustrated Partner

Confession #1: I dread Friday nights knowing my partner will be home for two days, spending them playing video games and watching related YouTube videos.

Confession #2: My partner prefers gaming over intimacy. I walked in wearing my best lingerie, and he barely noticed.

Confession #3: I am utterly sick of the endless hours my partner devotes to gaming.

It’s as if they could be in the middle of a disaster, and their eyes would still be glued to the screen. I’m juggling work-from-home duties, homeschooling, and taking care of our baby and three kids, while my partner sits idly gaming all day. And they wonder why intimacy has dwindled.

Confession #4: My partner’s hygiene is slipping, showering only once a week while they spend all their time gaming.

Confession #5: They come home early, and instead of helping with chores, they retreat to the bathroom, where they indulge in video games while neglecting our responsibilities.

It’s frustrating to feel like I’m doing everything alone while my partner remains disengaged, only interested in their gaming sessions. I want them to realize that ignoring the household and family for video games isn’t just a hobby; it’s affecting our relationship.

There are mothers out there who steal late-night moments for themselves while their partners are busy gaming. Why can’t these partners reserve their gaming for when the household needs are met? After putting the baby to bed, I often see my partner retreat to their gaming setup while I try to enjoy some downtime. It often leaves me feeling disheartened about our marriage.

Confession #6: I’m the only breadwinner while my partner stays home unemployed, playing games and planning solo vacations. When do I get a break?

Confession #7: My partner avoids going outside with the kids or helping with chores, choosing to remain glued to the screen instead.

It’s one thing to juggle responsibilities with work; it’s another to ignore your family and household because of gaming. While it’s important to take time for yourself, you can’t neglect your loved ones for video games. Just for a day, I’d love to switch roles, gaming while my partner manages work and family.

Confession #8: My partner thinks that just because they pay the bills, spending every free moment gaming isn’t lazy. But the cycle of eating, sleeping, and gaming is relentless.

Confession #9: Despite being in quarantine, my partner hasn’t checked on me in days, preferring to drink and game instead while the kids beg for attention.

It’s clear that some of these partners need a serious wake-up call.
