Even Matthew Perry offered fans a sneak peek at the much-anticipated Friends reunion taping! The beloved ’90s sitcom is preparing to film a special that isn’t quite a reboot. According to reports from Good Morning America, David Schwimmer recently joined The Graham Norton Show and excitedly revealed that the long-awaited reunion will commence filming next week in Los Angeles. Since then, fans have been sharing glimpses of the set on Twitter.
Much like Ross’s attempt to win over a neighbor with a minuscule gift basket, Schwimmer provided fans with a small nugget of information about what to expect from the special. He noted that viewers won’t see Ross, Rachel, Monica, Phoebe, Chandler, and Joey in their original characters. “I’ll be myself. I’ll be David,” Schwimmer clarified regarding the unscripted special. “We’re not in character … we’re all ourselves, the real people.”
When asked if he had prepared for filming by revisiting the series, Schwimmer humorously confessed, “You know, it’s funny. I should have been doing that. I really have very little excuse. But I haven’t been able to bring myself to catch up on the 236 episodes.” He added, “I guess I need to watch a lot over the next five days,” with a chuckle.
Producers and cast members have consistently expressed that they are not interested in revisiting their characters. Co-creator Marta Kauffman stated in 2014, “What was at the heart of the show is done. It’s been 20 years, and let’s be honest, nobody looks like they did then. You’d spend the whole time going, ‘Wow, he’s aged.’” However, Schwimmer teased that there’s a segment where they’ll read something together, without revealing more details.
Lisa Kudrow also shared her thoughts with Rob Lowe on his podcast, Literally With Rob Lowe, and echoed similar sentiments about the project. “It’s not a scripted thing,” she explained. “We’re not portraying our characters. It’s us getting together, which just doesn’t happen often, especially not in front of an audience since 2004. I think it’ll be great.”
Excitement has been palpable across social media, with fans sharing images of the set. Matthew Perry even took to Instagram to post a behind-the-scenes snapshot, which he later deleted, captioning it, “Seconds before eating a makeup brush. Not to mention reuniting with my Friends.”
Kudrow reassured fans not to read too much into the cast’s delay in reuniting. “We’re all incredibly grateful for the unique experience we shared. We loved — and love — each other, and genuinely had so much fun for 10 years. We’re just really thankful,” she said. “When we have managed to get together, it’s been fantastic, even if it’s just a couple of us.”
Originally set to air last May alongside the launch of HBO Max, the special faced delays due to the pandemic. “We’ll do it when we all determine it’s safe,” Schwimmer confirmed in mid-summer 2020. “It’s just a question of when will be the safest time.” Filming was postponed indefinitely in August amid rising coronavirus cases, but the Friends reunion special is expected to air later this year on HBO Max.
