Let’s be real for a moment. The past year has been incredibly challenging.
When I say challenging, I mean it has been nearly unbearable. The days feel like they’re stuck in an endless cycle of pandemic updates, political strife, and social chaos. Occasionally, something different catches our attention—maybe a royal event, a celebrity news story, or a viral performance. But soon enough, we return to the same overwhelming narratives, and the burden of these unprecedented times weighs heavily on us once again.
After everything we’ve endured (and let’s take a moment to acknowledge that our survival is significant), it’s crucial for everyone in the United States to focus on both physical and mental health. Remember, Covid-19 is still a reality (with cases rising in various areas), and taking care of our mental well-being is equally vital. If you’ve hesitated to consult a mental health professional before, now is the time to explore those options. Even if you feel “fine,” nurturing your mental health should be as routine as your dental check-ups.
I believe there’s a specific group that might need a gentle reminder—or even a strong nudge—to prioritize their mental wellness. This group often overlooks their own mental health needs due to a long-standing cultural expectation to be resilient and strong: Black mothers, I’m addressing you directly.
This isn’t to downplay the importance of mental health for anyone else. Regardless of race, gender, or background, it’s essential for all of us to dismantle the stigma around seeking mental health support. Whether we’re feeling anxious, hopeless, or anything in between, resources are available.
However, Black mothers have faced a unique set of challenges over the last year, and our mental health has taken a significant hit. Research indicates that Black adults, particularly Black women, report feeling sad and hopeless more frequently than their white counterparts, yet many don’t receive the care they need.
Accessing mental health services has historically been difficult within the Black community for several reasons: a lack of trust in the healthcare system, a reliance on faith, and financial obstacles. But after the tumultuous year we’ve all experienced, the need for mental health support is more pressing than ever, especially for Black mothers.
Here are three reasons why it’s crucial for Black moms to seek mental health services now:
- The Impact of Covid-19: Covid-19 has disproportionately affected Black and Brown communities. Statistics show that Black individuals are more likely to be diagnosed, hospitalized, and die from the virus compared to white individuals. For Black mothers, this means carrying the weight of caring for families during a global crisis, often while dealing with personal health issues or the grief of losing loved ones. This reality can leave us feeling drained.
- Educational Challenges: Many Black families have opted for virtual schooling during the pandemic, even when in-person options became available. This choice stems from a desire to protect families from the virus, especially in multi-generational households. The historical mistrust of the educational system, rooted in racism and underfunding, has also led many Black parents to prefer homeschooling their children. As primary caregivers, Black mothers have had to shoulder the extra burden of supporting their children’s education while maintaining household responsibilities, which can be overwhelming.
- Systemic Injustice: The ongoing dehumanization of Black lives due to systemic injustice adds to the emotional toll. The recent tragedies affecting the Black community have left many mothers grieving the loss of their children or feeling constant fear for their safety. This collective trauma needs to be addressed, and mental health professionals can help us process these emotions.
To my fellow Black mothers, I urge you to seek professional help for your mental wellness. This is not a sign of weakness; it’s a testament to your strength. Protecting your mental health is essential for you and your family.
And to my allies of all races, I encourage you to support the Black mothers in your lives by encouraging them to prioritize their mental health. A healthier society benefits us all.
We all know the incredible potential of Black girl magic to create positive change in the world. Together, let’s ensure that Black mothers have the support they need to thrive.
