The sentiment can be distilled into a stark reality: “It does not change my life.” In essence, the suffering of others, particularly Black individuals, seems irrelevant to those who are not directly affected.
This disheartening perspective was echoed by a police officer in Virginia who told a man, after using pepper spray on him, “You made this way more difficult than it had to be.” A routine traffic stop spiraled into a distressing reminder of the blatant disregard some officers have for the lives of Black citizens.
The Incident
On December 5, 2020, an unarmed Black and Latino Army Lieutenant, named Jamal Carter, was pulled over in a small Virginia town. The officers never disclosed the reason for the stop. Within just three minutes, a Black man’s life was precariously balanced between life and death for no justifiable reason. Since then, Lt. Carter has filed a lawsuit against the police department, claiming excessive force was used during his encounter with Officers Brian Thompson and Eric Morales. The incident was captured on video, which has since been made public and is now under scrutiny in the court of public opinion.
Lieutenant Carter is seeking $1 million in compensatory damages, asserting that the police acted with excessive force. Carter, stating, “There’s no need for this to be on your record… If you want to fight and argue, we’ll charge you.” It’s unclear what charges they could possibly levy against him, as he had committed no crime—he merely sought to understand the reason for his stop.
