Is It (Really, Really) Hot In Here, Or Is It Just Me?

It had been quite a while since we ventured into the great outdoors, and let me tell you, our garden and lawn were in dire need of attention. After hours of hard work, we filled six yard waste bags to the brim. The satisfaction of reclaiming our yard was incredible, and I could see our neighborhood property values bouncing back to where they ought to be.

However, come Sunday, every single movement felt like a workout. My arms ached, my legs were sore, my shoulders throbbed, and my back? Oh boy. My husband was in the same boat. The kids? Absolutely fine, and yes, they had been right there alongside us the entire time.

As I woke up today to head into the clinic where I practice medicine, I felt like I had survived the early stages of perimenopause and the physical toll from battling the weeds. I was noticeably less sore than the previous day. Arriving early, I greeted one of the medical assistants and we chatted about her adorable 3-year-old son. I eagerly asked to see a picture, and she happily obliged. The cuteness was undeniable.

Then she asked if I had any children or grandchildren, and for the first time ever, I was asked if I had grandchildren. I’m in my mid-40s, so it’s certainly a possibility, and I deeply desire to have grandchildren in my future. Let’s just say, my mind raced with thoughts in response to that innocent question.

I often remind my children how much I cherish each stage of life. Deep down, I believe that life only gets richer and more fulfilling with age. I’ve embraced every hot flash (though I wouldn’t mind if they stayed away), each gray hair, and every muscle that protests after a day of pulling weeds. I’ve come to terms with the fact that it’s been ages since anyone has asked for my ID. I’m relishing this no-drama, take-no-nonsense phase of life.

But a word of advice: when you ask me about my kids, do remember to react with surprise when I eventually share the news of my grandchildren. And for goodness’ sake, please turn up the air-conditioning while you’re at it.
