A Much-Needed Boost from My Child’s Teacher During Pandemic Learning

Although I’ve been a stay-at-home parent for a few years, my husband remained employed as an “essential” worker, which was a blessing. At the time, my son was in second grade, my daughter in kindergarten, and my youngest was just two years old. Having all three kids at home constantly was manageable; they can be a handful, but I treasure the extra time spent together. However, the outside world’s uncertainty heightened my anxiety. I found myself glued to my phone and TV, tracking the rising number of COVID-19 cases, waiting for updates from the governor, and hoping for school guidance about the remainder of the year.

In those early months, everything felt overwhelming and chaotic. I let our daily routines slip, prioritizing news updates and family games over structure. I was just a mom trying to hold it together for my kids amidst the madness.

Fast forward to now: While we’ve managed to find our footing again, the unpredictable school schedules of the 2020-21 year have brought fresh waves of anxiety. Our district started the year fully remote, then switched to hybrid, reverted back to remote, and then hybrid again. Now, after a year since schools first closed, we’re finally preparing for five days of in-person learning.

Do I really need to explain? You understand how inconsistent this school year has been, and despite the efforts of dedicated teachers and administrators, it has created stress for families like mine. I constantly question whether I’m supporting my kids appropriately academically and in other areas. Am I involved enough? Am I doing too much?

Yesterday, however, I received an email from my son’s art teacher after he attended class on a hybrid day. It was brief but incredibly uplifting. It reassured me that I’m not failing as a parent.

I truly appreciate the support I get from my husband and our community, yet hearing positive feedback from outside our circle feels amazing. Sending my child out into the world during such uncertain times is nerve-wracking, so knowing he’s thriving is a relief.

So, thank you, Ms. Thompson! Your kind words meant more than you can imagine. We think you’re fantastic too!
