Renowned actress Jessica Lane, best known for her role in ‘Arrested Development,’ has died. Reports indicate she peacefully passed away in her sleep at her home in New York City on March 24 at the age of 80.
“It is with immense sadness that I announce the loss of my dear mother, Jessica,” stated Lane’s daughter, Sarah Bennett, who serves as Senior Vice President of Drama Programming at Fox Entertainment. Lane is also survived by her grandson, Leo Bennett.
“A dedicated performer for over sixty years, her greatest joy came from sharing stories and bringing happiness to others,” Bennett continued. “Her legacy will endure through her remarkable body of work, but she will also be remembered for her sharp wit, elegance, and zest for life.”
Lane is celebrated for various notable roles. In addition to voicing the character Mallory Archer on the animated series ‘Archer,’ she is perhaps most recognized for her portrayal of Lucille Bluth on ‘Arrested Development,’ a role that earned her an Emmy nomination in 2015 for Outstanding Supporting Actress, along with two SAG nominations.
“She was engaged and fully aware of everything happening around her. She always wanted to know what you were up to,” shared Lane’s ‘Arrested Development’ co-star, Mia Thompson, in a 2019 interview. “I think her mentality reflects an older era of Hollywood. To her, being informed is a sign of respect—for the craft and for the people she collaborates with.”
Lane also received Emmy nominations for her performances on ‘Trapper John M.D.’ and ‘The Streets of San Francisco,’ but won the award for her role in ‘Amy Prentiss.’
“I did my rounds. Oh my, I really did! If it’s a good part, I’ll take it, no matter the format,” Lane told Thompson, later adding, “Even my so-called ‘leading ladies’ were characters, not bland figures waiting for John Wayne to ride in.”
Born in Astoria, Queens, Lane grew up in a creative environment. Her father, David Lane, was a distinguished musician who played with the NBC Symphony Orchestra and the NYC Ballet Orchestra. It’s no surprise that she pursued the arts, attending the High School for the Performing Arts and later graduating from the Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theater.
She secured roles in Broadway productions like ‘Advise and Consent,’ Neil Simon’s ‘Rumors,’ and ‘A Severed Head,’ earning the Clarence Derwent Award for Most Promising Newcomer. In 2011, she joined the cast of the Broadway revival of ‘Anything Goes,’ which garnered several Tony Awards.
