The 10 Commandments of Costco Parenting

I find myself spending a significant amount of time at Costco. It’s my go-to spot for roughly 90% of my grocery shopping. I can grab a massive ice cream for my kids without breaking the bank, and I can order a delicious pizza that’s ready just as I finish my shopping. What’s not to love?

However, the shopping experience can be marred by the sheer number of people who seem to lack basic common sense, manners, and a sense of decency. To help out the few who are navigating the aisles with respect, I’ve put together a set of guidelines for those who might need a gentle nudge in the right direction. Here are The 10 Commandments of Costco:

  1. Have your membership card ready at the entrance.
  2. If you don’t have your card handy, please pull your cart over to the side and get out of everyone’s way.
  3. When you enter the refrigerated section, don’t block the entrance by leaving your cart in the doorway.
  4. When approaching the free samples, take a moment to consider those around you. If you see a mom with young children and only a few samples left, let the kids have them first. Those torta rolls are a crowd favorite!
  5. If you see a mother with any children at Costco on the weekend, give her a smile. She’s managing a miracle.
  6. For those checking receipts at the exit: if there are multiple kids in a cart, please don’t just put one smiley face on the back of the receipt. Instead, hand out a smiley to each child on identical-sized paper.
  7. As you walk back to your car with your cart, avoid strolling in the middle of the parking lot at a slow pace. Please move to the side.
  8. Always return your carts to the designated area.
  9. When exiting the parking lot, stop and give way to anyone who’s been waiting for more than a minute to back out.
  10. When someone lets you out of a tough parking spot, don’t forget to smile, wave, and say thank you.

Anyone who follows these commandments will surely be recognized as a courteous shopper. Those who don’t? Well, let’s just say they might find themselves facing an eternity in the chaotic abyss of Costco hell—better known as the parking lot.
