New School Year Resolutions: A Fresh Start for Families

As summer draws to a close, it can be a shock to realize that the new school year is just around the corner. I recently heard one of my son’s buddies ask if he had picked up his school supplies yet. Poor kid seemed completely blindsided by the impending end of summer. I can relate; I’ve been in denial myself. Once again, I find myself rummaging through the remnants at the store after all the organized parents have scooped up the trendy items.

But it’s time to snap out of it, gather the essential school supplies, and embrace the excitement of a new year! My reluctance to accept reality may have cost my son his choice of folders, but that doesn’t mean we can’t make this school year memorable. Let’s kick things off with a set of resolutions to help us make the most of it. Here are my New School Year Resolutions for 2023–2024:

  1. I will capture a delightful first-day-of-school photo of my children. No excuses. This year, I am determined to get that perfect shot—and yes, I’ll also document them on the last day of school for a fun side-by-side comparison.
  2. I will remember school picture day. This is the year I’ll mark it on the calendar and make sure my kids have fresh haircuts in advance. I’ll even fill out the order forms the night before, rather than at the last minute. And yes, I promise to display their school photos instead of shoving them into a drawer.
  3. I will make sure everyone knows exactly where their shoes are before bed. No more frantic morning searches that lead to tears and chaos. Bonus points for those who help me eliminate the dreaded sock basket—let’s match those socks before school starts!
  4. I will check my son’s backpack regularly. Not every night—that’s a bit much—but enough to avoid that mortifying moment when a rotting sandwich is discovered weeks later. We all know how that goes.
  5. I will sign all permission slips on time. Last year, I may have forgotten a field trip form, leading to an unexpected bonding experience for my son and the librarian.
  6. I promise to read everything I sign. Signing blindly can lead to unexpected surprises, like a volunteer form disguised as a permission slip.
  7. I will enforce a morning peace treaty between my teenage daughters. No one wants to deal with sibling rivalry before the school day starts. If they do end up arguing, the loser will have to tackle cleaning out their younger brother’s backpack.
  8. I will give thoughtful gifts to my children’s teachers. Last year’s lottery ticket taped to a pack of Tic Tacs won’t cut it. This time, I’ll at least pair it with some chocolate.
  9. I will keep my cool before school. No yelling, regardless of what gets forgotten or how late we are running. The last message my kids hear from me should be positive, not a frantic shout about being late.
  10. I will remember that the school days are longer than they used to be. My kids have more to process and less downtime, so I’ll make it a point to be patient, listen to their concerns, and wipe away the tears when homework gets tough—before they notice I’m tearing up too.

So here’s to the upcoming 2023–2024 school year! Our family is ready to tackle whatever comes our way. Just as soon as we gather the necessary school supplies.
