From the Confessional: Stop Traveling During a Pandemic, Seriously

We all know that comparing ourselves to others can be detrimental to our mental health. Allowing feelings of bitterness, resentment, and jealousy to take root within us can lead to emotional corrosion. It’s essential to let that negativity go—right? But what happens during a pandemic when it’s crucial for everyone to make sacrifices? When we all need to wear masks, practice social distancing, stay home, and cancel plans—even those dream vacations? Yet, we see so many individuals ignoring those guidelines.

Can we truly avoid feeling negative when we’ve pulled our kids from their friends and school, canceled birthday parties, and scrapped trips to Disney, while our neighbor Chris is hosting a massive Thanksgiving gathering and jetting off to a tropical paradise the next day? How are we supposed to suppress feelings of anger and jealousy when it seems others aren’t being held to the same standards?

If you’re feeling bitter this year, we completely understand. It’s incredibly frustrating to witness so many people refusing to take the necessary steps to help us all return to normalcy. We can only hope that enough of us will choose the right path so that one day, COVID will be a thing of the past, allowing those of us who put our lives on hold for the greater good to take vacations, reconnect with distant relatives, and enjoy weekend getaways.

Until then, we need to remain strong and committed to making responsible and selfless choices as we navigate through this pandemic—even if our thoughtless neighbors won’t.

I find myself wanting to shout at friends and family sharing photos of their dining out experiences and vacations. YOU are part of the problem. YOU are contributing to the ongoing pandemic. How can you be so selfish?

Confessionals

Confessional #25805728: No, I do not want to hear about your vacation plans. I had to leave my job to suddenly start homeschooling my kids. Just stop!

Confessional #25803807: I’m so tired of people complaining about the cancellation of sports when they’re the same individuals who won’t wear masks and are off on vacations. YOU are the reason this is still happening. Stay home!

Confessional #25792356: It’s disheartening to see so many people flocking to tourist destinations while I’m stuck here. They seem to care more about their vacation than the health of others.

Confessional #25787659: The reality is, those who can’t seem to enjoy a game at home and insist on gathering with friends every weekend are the very people prolonging this nightmare. So thanks for nothing. I hope your beach margaritas were worth it.

Confessional #25801524: It makes me mad and jealous to see people vacationing during a deadly pandemic.

Confessional #25805645: I post about the home improvements we’re making because we chose to be responsible and stay home this year, yet I can’t shake the envy I feel toward those who didn’t. Their homes may look great, but I want them to think about their choices.

Confessional #25792381: I’m fed up with seeing families on vacation, pretending the pandemic doesn’t exist. I hate feeling jealous because I can’t take those risks with my family. I’m tired of missing out on life.

Confessional #25791367: Another common feeling many of us are experiencing is jealousy. Why do others seem to escape sacrifice? Why can their kids still go to Disney? It’s unfair and truly disappointing.

Confessional #25800771: I want to go on a vacation so badly.

Confessional #25787182: I’m sad because we finally have the time and some money, yet we can’t go on a nice getaway.

Confessional #25786866: I need a break from my kids. Far, far away.

Confessional #25786866: The truth is, we all desperately need a vacation. Even just an hour alone in a quiet park would do wonders. But we know it’s not safe, and we genuinely care about others.

Confessional #25791973: I try not to shame people for their choices, but it feels like everyone I know is going on vacation to Florida, and I just don’t understand it.

Confessional #25790481: I’m confused and heartbroken as I see friends posting about traveling, going out to eat, and visiting tourist attractions. Didn’t we agree to avoid these activities?

Confessional #25797551: My mom was so cautious about COVID, saying she wouldn’t see me for two years, only to tell me she’s going on vacation with my sister a week later. What gives?

Confessional #25787812: My parents traveled abroad in March and brought COVID back, affecting our small town. It’s infuriating.

Confessional #25787504: My mother-in-law is going out to eat without a mask and plans to stay with us during the holidays. I’m extremely frustrated.

Confessional #25793611: I used to be active and volunteer regularly before the lockdown. Not one friend reached out to me until someone asked if I could watch her kids while she goes on a vacation. That’s a hard pass.

Confessional #25793611: What’s even more disheartening is when it’s our own family doing the traveling. Seriously, Mom and Dad? You’re the ones we’re making sacrifices for, yet you’re flaunting your vacation plans?

At the end of the day, holding onto resentment does us no good. Especially in a year like this, we need to make room in our hearts for joy and gratitude. If you find yourself feeling a bit frustrated after scrolling through social media, that’s okay too. Just remember, when all is said and done, you can look your kids in the eye and say, “We did the right thing. We did our part. And I’m proud of us for that.” For more insights, check out this other post on home insemination and explore ways to enhance your family planning journey with fertility supplements.
