This group, composed entirely of women of color, emerged as a beacon for the progressive left after their historic wins in 2018. They have continued to energize their supporters across social media platforms, despite facing a barrage of racist attacks from various opponents.
Election Highlights
Most members of The Coalition did not encounter significant opposition during this election cycle. However, Sofia Rivera, arguably the most prominent member, faced a more challenging race. Representing New York’s 14th Congressional District, a heavily Democratic area in the Bronx, her seat was generally deemed secure. Yet, as a powerful woman of color, she attracted national attention and funding against her from outside the state, including from the “Stop Sofia PAC,” which directed nearly $70,000 towards a digital campaign aimed at undermining her candidacy.
Looking Ahead
In the newly elected House of Representatives, The Coalition will be joined by other progressive leaders. While results continue to be tallied in several states, races have been confirmed for Malik Johnson in New York’s 16th Congressional District and Leah Thompson in Missouri’s 1st Congressional District. Both candidates received endorsements from Justice Progressives, the organization that initially backed the founding members of The Coalition.
As we continue to fill Congress with progressive voices, it opens doors for the original members of The Coalition to aspire to even greater roles. Sofia Rivera has hinted at ambitions beyond her current position, stating, “I don’t know if I’m going to remain in the House forever, or if I do, what that would look like.” Could we see a President Rivera in the future? One can only dream.
