In a bold move, LeAnna Brooks is shedding both her clothes and her insecurities. In a heartfelt essay for Glamour, the singer opened up about her long battle with psoriasis, a condition she has faced since the age of 2. This time, she decided to strip down and showcase the skin condition that she usually kept hidden.
“Perhaps it’s the challenging times we’ve faced recently that have shifted my perspective, but I now feel a strong urge to break free from my limitations,” she expressed, adding, “I’m exhausted from hiding.”
For years, Brooks has dealt with her psoriasis through various treatments, including steroid creams and even wrapping herself in coal tar. “When I was out in public, I did everything possible to conceal it,” she wrote, often resorting to wearing two pairs of pantyhose or heavy jeans even in the heat. “Underneath my shirt, my stomach was covered in painful scales that would bleed. I spent so much of my life feeling the need to hide.”
While she found a successful treatment in her 20s, she stopped taking medication about two and a half years ago, leading to a resurgence of her symptoms. “Suddenly, I transitioned from doing what I love surrounded by friends to spending my days in sweatpants at home. Stress is a known trigger for psoriasis, and with so much uncertainty, my flare-ups returned,” she shared.
Now, in recognition of World Psoriasis Day (October 29), Brooks is ready to embrace her condition. Photographed by Amy Peterson, she participated in a nude shoot to “finally be honest about what psoriasis is and what it looks like.”
“Revealing something I’ve held in for so long feels like an enormous sigh of relief. My body, mind, and spirit desperately needed this,” Brooks reflected. Psoriasis affects over 125 million people and is an immune-mediated disease leading to inflammation. Beyond its physical toll, it can significantly impact emotional well-being, relationships, and stress management, according to the National Psoriasis Foundation.
“We’re currently in a time when we’re all being stripped of what we thought we needed — and it’s clear we are worthy and enough without the facade,” Brooks stated. “We deserve love without having to earn it.”
On social media, Peterson commended Brooks for her bravery, stating, “Witnessing someone embrace themselves authentically is both empowering and beautiful. May we all support each other in such courageous vulnerability.”
Brooks’ essay and Peterson’s photography received an overwhelming response, which Brooks described as an “outpouring of love.” “You are not alone,” she reassured her followers. “That was my primary motivation for sharing such a vulnerable part of my life. Many people struggle with psoriasis, among other challenges, and it’s important to know you are loved and worthy.”
