Ah, June has arrived! You know what that means—Father’s Day is fast approaching, bringing with it a whirlwind of emotions. For some, it’s a wonderful occasion to shower the fathers in their lives with love and gratitude. Conversely, there are those still nursing wounds from being overlooked on Mother’s Day, preparing for a major backlash on June 21. Then there are individuals with intricate and sometimes strained relationships with their own fathers or in-laws, turning this day into an exhausting drama year after year.
Whether you eagerly anticipate this day or dread its arrival, it’s right around the corner. Are you prepared? Do you have a strategy in place (even if your plan involves hiding in a closet with chocolate and wine during the festivities)?
I chatted with my partner about Father’s Day and mentioned that, given our recent spike in the power bill, I really need to budget until payday. He responded that he’d be content with a six-pack of beer, a homemade cake, and BBQ chicken for dinner—no gifts. I love this low-maintenance guy!
Confessions of a Father’s Day Planner
Confessional #1: I got my partner an incredible Father’s Day gift and can hardly wait to give it to him. He’s truly the best and deserves it!
Confessional #2: Yesterday, my husband took care of our daughter while I indulged in a three-hour nap on Father’s Day. That man deserves a medal!
Confessional #3: I splurged on a $130 bottle of scotch for Father’s Day. Poor guy is surrounded by a household full of redheaded girls—even our dogs are female. He’s a saint, and we’re keeping him!
If Father’s Day is a joyful occasion in your home and you’re excited to celebrate your partner, we wish you a day filled with laughter, heartfelt cards, and plenty of dad jokes.
On the flip side, if you’re grappling with resentment over an ungrateful spouse or lingering frustrations from a disappointing Mother’s Day, we hope this day passes swiftly.
I truly loathe Father’s Day. My husband is a great dad, but he’s not mine, and my own father might be one of the worst. It’s tough not to feel bitter when everyone else is celebrating their amazing dads.
Confessional #4: My dad chose my stepmom over his own kids and grandkids. Happy Father’s Day, Dad; you’ve missed out on so much.
We understand that many of you carry the burden of having a not-so-great father, which can make this day particularly heavy.
Confessional #5: I’m really not looking forward to the guilt trip that comes with spending time with my father-in-law. He hardly acknowledges us any other day, but heaven forbid we skip his special day! I wish it could be all about my husband instead!
And let’s face it—many of you are stuck dealing with pesky in-laws because that’s part of the marriage deal (the worst part, but a rule nonetheless).
Confessional #6: I’m just grateful my kids can be bratty little monsters on Father’s Day too.
Confessional #7: My daughter, just 20 months old, covered herself in poop from head to toe and screamed while we hosed her off in the shower. Happy Father’s Day, dear hubby!
At least your children are acting like kids on Father’s Day, right?
Confessional #8: I read reviews about sugar-free gummy bears causing severe stomach issues. Guess what’s on the gift list from the kids for their dad this year!
Perhaps Father’s Day is a chance to get a little revenge on an ex who wronged you…
Confessional #9: This is the first Father’s Day I can’t visit my late fiancé’s grave in six years, and it feels unsettling.
This day can evoke a lot of emotions, especially when you remember a loved one who is no longer with you.
Confessional #10: My brother called to wish me a happy Father’s Day, acknowledging that as a single mom, I’m doing both jobs. That made me smile.
As you plan for Father’s Day, think of a day filled with relaxation, meals prepared for you, and leisure time. Wait, isn’t every Sunday essentially Father’s Day?
Confessional #11: During a little mishap with some adult toys, I found myself panicking. How would we even explain that to the ER doctor with a straight face?
Confessional #12: A restaurant email suggested giving Dad what he really wants for Father’s Day, and my mind immediately went somewhere else entirely!
Confessional #13: I sent the kids outside to play and asked my husband if he wanted to sneak in a quickie on Father’s Day. It felt exhilarating and satisfying!
If Father’s Day provides an opportunity for some fun, why not take advantage of it?
Happy Father’s Day to all the wonderful dads who deserve a day to unwind, enjoy a cold drink, or even a new grill apron! We appreciate you! And for all the moms who struggle with this day for various reasons, hang in there. It’s just one day. Let it pass, then wake up on Monday, dust yourself off, and remember how amazing you are—whether or not you have a fantastic partner to celebrate.
