The other night, while browsing through Netflix with my partner, I stumbled upon a show called ‘Sweet Magnolias’ that was topping the charts. It was unfamiliar to me, but I had a feeling it would resonate with my taste.
After watching the trailer featuring three resilient women tackling life’s challenges together, I was sold. My partner suggested we check out another show, but I firmly stated, “I want to watch Sweet Magnolias.” It reminded me of my cherished summer novels, and I was craving something uplifting. After some persuasion, he reluctantly agreed to join me.
To our surprise, after just two episodes, he was hooked. His exact words were, “I just need to watch one more before we call it a night.” Victory!
‘Sweet Magnolias’ has all the ingredients I adore in a series. It’s a feel-good show reminiscent of Hallmark movies, yet it packs enough drama to keep you on your toes. Plus, it’s family-friendly, making it perfect for viewing with my kids.
The series, consisting of ten episodes, is set in the quaint southern town of Serenity and is based on the book series by Sherryl Woods. I’m not sure how I missed these books, but they’re now at the top of my summer reading list — even after watching the show, I crave more of this heartwarming tale.
The stunning visuals in ‘Sweet Magnolias’ are a treat in themselves. The breathtaking landscapes, flowering trees, and vibrant magnolias can almost make you forget the world outside, especially during these times of quarantine.
The lead character, Maddie, portrayed by JoAnna Garcia, is navigating the turbulent waters of divorce after her husband leaves her for a much younger coworker. With her life turned upside down, she faces the possibility of losing her home and re-entering the workforce after years of being a stay-at-home mom to her three children. Fortunately, her best friends, played by Brooke Elliot and Heather Headley, rally around her to help put her life back together. Together, they purchase a charming old mansion and transform it into their dream spa — it’s like a cross between HGTV and ‘Gilmore Girls’.
Throughout the series, these three women confront various life hurdles, including divorce, rekindled romances, parenting challenges, and workplace drama, all while enjoying tasty cocktails every Friday night. One of my favorite aspects is how they fill their glasses, inspiring you to head to the kitchen for your own margarita!
The culinary scenes are mouthwatering and might even inspire you to start your own bed and breakfast. Not only does the show highlight the strength of female friendships, but it also provides comfort and motivation amid the occasional drama, ensuring it never feels too light-hearted. There’s even a little eye candy sprinkled throughout, though I was so engrossed in the plot that I didn’t pay much attention.
Without giving too much away, the finale leaves you on the edge of your seat, eager for more — and fans are understandably frustrated about the cliffhanger. While Netflix hasn’t confirmed a second season yet, rumors suggest that if the audience continues to love it (it did dethrone ‘Avatar’ for the top spot with a five-star rating), we could see Season 2 as early as 2021.
If you’re feeling bogged down by the negativity around you, I wholeheartedly recommend ‘Sweet Magnolias.’ Even if your partner insists they won’t enjoy it and suggests you watch it alone, trust me — you should override their decision. My partner and I binge-watched it in just two nights, and I might have noticed a tear in his eye when it ended (but let’s keep that just between us). This show is equally enjoyable whether you’re curled up in bed alone or sharing it with someone special.
In fact, I might just head back to my room for a second round right now. It’s that good!
