How can schools celebrate graduation while adhering to social distancing guidelines? This is a challenge numerous high schools and colleges are facing during the ongoing pandemic. Some families have opted for drive-by celebrations, while celebrities have organized virtual events and inspiring speeches for 2020 graduates. However, one high school in New Hampshire has truly set itself apart with an imaginative and memorable graduation plan.

Kennett High School, located in North Conway, New Hampshire, will conduct its graduation ceremony atop a mountain. On June 13, seniors will take turns riding the chairlift up the 2,000-foot Cranmore Mountain to receive their diplomas at the peak before enjoying a scenic ride back down as fresh high school graduates.

The idea originated as a lighthearted joke among the school staff regarding how social distancing would affect this year’s ceremony. However, with the president and general manager of Cranmore Mountain Resort, Jake Thompson, being an alumnus of Kennett, the concept quickly gained traction. “I thought it was worth reaching out,” said Principal Sarah Ellis, who then contacted Thompson. He consulted with the owners, who enthusiastically approved the idea.

Traditionally, Kennett’s graduation ceremony takes place on the school’s football field. Yet, due to the pandemic, this was not feasible. Instead, all 172 members of the class of 2020 will have the opportunity to collect their diplomas at the mountain summit, which also serves as the home base for the school’s ski team. Students who prefer can opt to receive their diplomas at the base. Each student’s journey up the mountain, diploma presentation, and return ride will take approximately 30 minutes, making this an epic alternative to the usual graduation ceremony.

Ellis mentioned that students are also curating a soundtrack for the event, adding to its uniqueness. Additionally, they plan to hold a celebratory car parade through Conway so the entire community can cheer on the graduating class. “Everyone is thrilled about this,” she exclaimed.

“It’s amazing to graduate from a ski town and do it at the top of a mountain by chairlift,” noted Lisa Gray, Cranmore’s marketing director. “This will definitely be a day to remember.”
