In our local community, the Garcia family is a familiar presence. With their four children, the Garcias are always a lively bunch. Their youngest is 12, just a year younger than our eldest. Each Sunday, our spirited little one, Zoe—who has a knack for darting around and endlessly exploring—joins them during church services. The mother, Maria, is equipped with an array of snacks and engaging activities that reflect her experience in parenting. Zoe seamlessly fits into their family dynamic.

Initially, I felt a twinge of guilt, as if I were imposing on their kindness while we focused on our worship. However, as I got to know Maria better, I realized that she genuinely enjoys having Zoe around. For her, it’s not an inconvenience but a delightful opportunity to connect with another child.

On the other hand, when I’m tasked with managing Zoe myself, it can be quite the challenge. I love her dearly, but she’s a bundle of energy. Having a family like the Garcias willing to support us during church is truly a blessing.

Then there’s our neighbor, Linda, who has become a cornerstone of support. Living in a remote area of Oregon, far from our relatives in the Midwest, we often find ourselves without traditional family support. Linda, a woman in her sixties with a welcoming smile and a kind heart, has stepped into our lives and made a significant impact.

I’m not sure how it all started, but Linda embraced us as if we were her own. When my partner was pursuing her degree, Linda volunteered to watch our youngest child three days a week, allowing my partner to attend classes. When we decide to have a date night, Linda is our first call. She even attends our kids’ soccer matches and brings thoughtful gifts for them, knowing their interests in superheroes and princesses.

Linda has essentially taken on the role of a surrogate grandmother, becoming an integral part of our family. While many people have family support, we don’t have that luxury, and it’s during times of distance from loved ones that you truly appreciate those who step in to help.

This sense of community is what makes a village so special. Not everyone is as generous as Linda or the Garcias; not everyone is willing to care for your children without expecting anything in return, simply because they enjoy being with them. Those individuals stand out as remarkable, and they can transform the experience of parenting from overwhelming to manageable.

You likely know someone like this in your life—perhaps a coach, a neighbor, a teacher, or even a friendly volunteer. These wonderful people deserve recognition, as they significantly contribute to our children’s lives and, in turn, to our well-being as parents.

It’s easy to focus on the challenges of parenting, and I too find joy in sharing my frustrations. However, let’s take a moment to appreciate those who love our kids without obligation. They are often the ones who help us navigate the tough times, especially when we feel isolated from our families or when our own relatives may not be as involved.

These helpers showcase what genuine love looks like, and it’s invaluable.
