Why I Won’t Consider Divorce

Parenting can be a real challenge—yet it can also be the most rewarding experience imaginable. It’s a curious paradox that often strikes simultaneously. Take this morning, for instance. I was completely drained and definitely not in the mood for our usual routine. My partner, Mia, and I have a morning tradition with our son, Leo, where we play games or sketch together on the couch right after he wakes up. To add to my frustration, our daughter, Ava, was cranky from lack of sleep, and Leo, at just three years old, was in tears because I accidentally sliced his pancakes incorrectly. It was one of those mornings that felt utterly miserable.

Yet amid the chaos, there were moments of pure magic. In the bathroom, Mia was gently brushing Leo’s hair while I stood in the kitchen scrolling through emails on my phone, watching Ava finish her breakfast at the table. Leo, at this age, is the exact size of a tiny creature from a fantasy film—he even moves and focuses in a way that’s utterly adorable. I couldn’t help but smile as he diligently worked through his breakfast, swapping his plate of pancakes for a bowl of oatmeal with a gleeful look that made my heart melt.

Recently, Leo started a nursery program twice a week, where his teacher showed him a nifty trick to avoid spilling his food. This morning, he sat up taller, bent over his bowl, and concentrated so hard on not making a mess that it was beyond cute. For a brief moment, I felt overwhelmed with love, my heart swelling to the point where I could hardly contain it.

In one moment I might feel stressed and overwhelmed, and in the next, I’m filled with joy—a stark contrast that can be exhausting yet exhilarating. When I reflect on my pre-parenting life, I realize I often felt bored and unfulfilled. Would I prefer to be lounging on the couch watching a movie or indulging in a yoga session? Sure, those sound tempting, but the reality is, I wouldn’t trade these moments for anything.

As noted in a revealing article by New York magazine, while parents may feel more stressed and unhappy day-to-day, there’s a profound sense of purpose that brings long-term satisfaction. Parenting can expose you to transcendent moments of love and connection, but amidst the sleepless nights and daily chaos, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed.

I have a personal guideline I follow: before reacting to a slow driver in front of me, I ask myself if I’ve had less than seven hours of sleep, indulged in too many treats, or had a spat with Mia. If the answer is yes to any of these, I take a step back and offer that driver a little grace before I let my frustration boil over.

The same principle applies to our relationships. We need to express our needs while also allowing our partners the space to breathe. Life with small children can be chaotic, and it’s crucial to accept that. In my opinion, couples with young kids should think twice before considering divorce. When parents are exhausted and overwhelmed, they aren’t in the right mindset to make such a significant decision. Of course, there are exceptions, particularly in cases of abuse or true incompatibility.

But more often than not, the person you married can come back to you as the kids grow older. When Mia became a mother, she transformed from a gentle dreamer to someone resembling a fierce warrior. I could joke about it now, but the reality is that the struggles of parenthood can change us. Thankfully, over time, she began to reemerge from the chaos, and one day she looked at me and said, “Wow, where have I been?” That moment reminded me of how much I would have lost if we had chosen to part ways during those tumultuous early years of parenting.

To sum it up, parenting is a wild ride filled with ups and downs. While moments of stress can feel overwhelming, the love and joy that come with raising children far outweigh those challenges. There’s simply too much at stake to make rash decisions when things get tough.
