Back-to-School Dread: Eight Things I’m Not Looking Forward To

As the new school year approaches, I find myself feeling less than enthusiastic. My recent experience with my son at day camp left me drained before 9 a.m., and it hit me that the chaos of back-to-school is just around the corner. Here are eight things I’m dreading as we gear up for another academic year:

1. The Rigor of Routines

People often say that establishing a routine is easy, but that’s just not true. Kids have their own agenda, which usually revolves around snacks and testing my patience. Getting everyone on a schedule feels like herding cats.

2. The Drop-off Line Drama

The drop-off line is meant for quick goodbyes, not for personal moments like tying shoes or last-minute hugs. Let’s keep it moving, folks! Just pull up, let the kids out, and drive away.

3. The Wardrobe Battle

Gone are the days of carefree summer outfits. Now, we have to reintroduce the concept of actual clothes and shoes. It’s exhausting to convince them that wearing the same shirt multiple days in a row is not socially acceptable.

4. The Never-ending Paperwork

The avalanche of paperwork is simply overwhelming. It feels like it’s never-ending, and I can’t help but feel a wave of dread wash over me just thinking about it.

5. The Memory Game

Keeping track of field trips, pajama days, and sneaker requirements is a job in itself. Not to mention sports schedules and volunteer opportunities. It’s easy to forget everything after a lazy summer.

6. The Germs Galore

With school comes the inevitable parade of viruses. Prepare for conjunctivitis, stomach bugs, and a plethora of sniffles. Stock up on tissues and hand sanitizer, because we’re in for a long year.

7. The Homework Headaches

Homework time is always a challenging ordeal. After a long day, the last thing anyone wants is to tackle math sheets and reading assignments. It turns our home into a battlefield.

8. The Lice Notices

Even if we’ve never had to deal with lice, seeing that notice sends me into a frenzy. I find myself checking everyone’s heads obsessively, and it’s enough to drive anyone crazy.

I miss the carefree days of summer—late dinners on the porch, flip-flops, and the freedom to let my kids go without changing clothes for days. The thought of transitioning back to being a strict schedule enforcer and chauffeur is overwhelming. I wish summer would linger just a bit longer.
