One of the most significant figures in my daughter’s life right now is someone we only know on a casual basis. We know her name, but not her birthday. We know where she works, but not where she lives. We’re aware of her profession, but we don’t know much about her interests or how she spends her free time.
What we do know is the profound impact she’s having on my daughter’s life. She’s my daughter’s speech therapist.
During their one-on-one sessions, my daughter engages in a world of play, laughter, and sometimes frustration alongside her therapist. Each week, they meet, creating a bond that my daughter genuinely anticipates. She gets excited as we approach the building, rushing in with enthusiasm. There are even times when she’s reluctant to leave when the session ends.
Our lives are filled with loving friends and family who share in our daily joys and challenges. We enjoy playdates at the park and family gatherings, connecting with loved ones near and far through video chats. Yet, amidst all these relationships, the speech therapist holds a unique place in our hearts.
Although we don’t invite her to join us at the park (even though my daughter would love that), the bond they share is deep and meaningful. Watching their interactions week after week fills me with gratitude.
What I’ve learned about my daughter’s speech therapist goes far beyond her dinner preferences or favorite television shows. I observe her patiently demonstrating sounds and shaping her mouth, engaging my daughter in games and activities that teach new words. Her creative approach with toys and games captures my daughter’s attention, and I see her offer gentle encouragement when things become difficult. The tender moments, like brushing my daughter’s hair away from her face or giving her an understanding pat on the arm when she’s feeling frustrated, speak volumes about her character.
Most importantly, I see her celebrating every milestone my daughter achieves. Her enthusiasm, complete with cheers, smiles, and high-fives, highlights her investment in my daughter’s progress.
I don’t need to share coffee with our speech therapist to appreciate her role in our lives. I witness her dedication and love for my daughter each week, and it’s clear that her patience and encouragement are pivotal in helping my daughter find her voice.
