Dear Little Ones,

As your dedicated mom, there’s a plethora of wisdom I yearn to share with you throughout your life. Some of it might seem like common sense—like treating others with respect, saying “please” and “thank you,” and not hitting when you’re angry. These are the fundamentals that loving parents have taught their children for generations. But I want to dive deeper and share some not-so-ordinary lessons that may take a bit longer to grasp. Here’s what I hope will resonate in your beautiful hearts.

  1. Treat Your Servers with Respect. Nothing irks me more than someone who snaps at a waiter or waitress. The only thing worse than chewing with your mouth open is being rude to those who serve you. Patience and kindness are key—your jalapeño poppers can wait.
  2. I’m Not Your Friend—Yet. While I may become your friend someday, my primary role right now is to be your mom. I love you more than anything, and it’s my job to help you navigate life, not just to be your buddy.
  3. Be Authentic. During the confusing years of adolescence, it can be tempting to pretend to be someone you’re not. Forget the notion of “faking it till you make it.” Embrace your true self, and if you feel out of place, just wait. Authenticity is your best path forward, and it will always serve you well.
  4. The World Doesn’t Owe You Anything. You need to earn your place in this world. Privilege and success aren’t handed out freely; they’re earned through hard work and integrity. Shine your light, and the rewards will follow.
  5. Honesty is Key. While it might seem harmless to stretch the truth occasionally, people can spot dishonesty from a mile away. Always choose to be truthful, even if it’s tough. It’s the only way to build genuine relationships.
  6. Understand Yourself. There will come a moment when you truly know what you want and need. That’s when I’ll know I’ve done my job right. Listen to that inner voice; it’s your heart guiding you, and ignoring it can lead to a life of mediocrity.
  7. Explore the World. Life is an incredible journey filled with diverse cultures and experiences. Don’t confine yourself to a small corner of existence. Go out, try new foods, and create unforgettable memories. You won’t regret it.
  8. Perform Small Acts with Great Intent. Simple gestures, like holding doors open or offering a smile, can have a profound impact on others. Don’t underestimate the power of kindness in your daily interactions.
  9. Avoid Judging Others. You are not responsible for how others live their lives. Focus on your own journey and extend kindness and understanding to everyone you meet. We’re all in this together.
  10. Love Fully. Authentic connections are what make us human. Yes, love can be scary, but it’s also the most rewarding experience. Don’t shy away from giving your heart completely; it’s the greatest adventure you’ll embark on.

Live your lives fully and remember that even if you falter in following my advice, you’ll always be my favorite people. Perfection is a myth, so strive to simply be good.

With all my love,
Mom
