Just when you thought your admiration for Target couldn’t get any stronger, they’ve found another way to impress us. For several years now, Target has commemorated Earth Day by offering parents a chance to recycle their outgrown car seats and receive a generous discount on new ones in return. This year, the initiative is set to continue, allowing you to hand over that bulky piece of hard-to-recycle plastic and receive 20% off your next purchase of a car seat, booster seat, seat base, or travel system at Target. Where else would you find such an offer? Target is simply the best.

According to a recent announcement, from April 22 to May 5, Target’s car seat trade-in program will be available for the third year in a row. “We’re thrilled to launch the third car seat trade-in program just in time for Earth Day on April 22 at Target locations nationwide,” stated Jessica Thompson, the senior vice president of children’s products at Target, in a press release. “Since we began this initiative in 2016, we’ve successfully recycled over 176,000 car seats, preventing more than 2.6 million pounds of materials from ending up in landfills. Our guests increasingly seek out products and experiences that are beneficial for their families and the planet, and our trade-in programs provide a simple way for them to contribute positively to the environment.”

Last year, Target collaborated with Terracycle to transform those old car seats into new products, but this time they are partnering with Waste Management. This partnership aims to upcycle car seats into items such as grocery carts, plastic buckets, and construction materials. It’s essential to recycle car seats because they are typically not accepted in curbside recycling programs and should never be sold or given away due to expiration and changing safety standards. Additionally, any car seat that has been damaged or involved in an accident, regardless of its appearance, must be replaced immediately.

Keeping these used car seats out of landfills is a significant win for the environment, and it’s also a fantastic opportunity for parents to grab discounted child safety gear. Happy Earth Day to everyone involved!

In summary, Target’s car seat recycling program is not just an eco-friendly initiative but also a way for parents to save money on necessary child safety equipment. From April 22 to May 5, participants can recycle their old car seats and enjoy a discount on new purchases, contributing positively to the environment while saving on costs.
