Last year, my teenage daughter, Emma, was invited by a classmate to volunteer at a community food drive organized by a local charity. Initially, she was reluctant, expressing a desire to spend her Saturday morning relaxing instead. However, I emphasized how rewarding it could be to contribute to a good cause.

After some debate, I dropped her off at the event early on a Saturday when she would have preferred to sleep in. With her hood up and a slight slouch, she walked in looking like the typical disgruntled teenager. However, by the end of the day, when I returned to pick her up, I was greeted by a huge grin. Despite her initial reluctance, she had a fantastic time. Not only did she help families in need by organizing food donations, but she also ran into several friends who joined her, allowing her to socialize while making a positive impact in the community.

In today’s world, parents often find themselves battling with teens over their excessive social media use and urging them to connect with others in meaningful ways. With their busy schedules filled with sports and school commitments, the idea of volunteering might seem overwhelming. However, it’s a crucial activity to consider as they navigate the tumultuous teen years filled with personal and emotional changes.

Research published in The Journal of Adolescence indicates that volunteering can significantly boost self-esteem and self-worth among teenagers—key factors during this developmental stage. Engaging in community service doesn’t have to be time-consuming; even small acts, like donating to a crowdfunding campaign or tutoring a peer, can make a difference.

Interestingly, the study highlighted that teens who step outside their comfort zones and assist strangers—rather than just their friends or family—experience greater benefits. Encouraging your teen to engage in unfamiliar situations can be daunting but ultimately rewarding. These experiences can foster a sense of accomplishment, enhancing their belief in themselves, which carries over into their daily lives.

Given the rising rates of depression among adolescents, volunteering can serve as a powerful antidote to feelings of loneliness and despair. It’s an ideal activity for teens, even if it’s only an occasional endeavor rather than a regular commitment. My push for Emma to volunteer that day has led her and her brother, Alex, to embrace volunteering more enthusiastically since then.

Humans are inherently social beings who thrive on connection and helping others. Yet, as they grow, societal pressures can challenge this natural instinct. Volunteering serves as a reminder that the world extends beyond their personal challenges. While it may not be their first choice for leisure activities, the mental health benefits and the joy it brings to those they assist are undeniable.
