Remember Honey Lemon? She’s the brilliant engineering student and chemistry whiz from Big Hero 6, known for her Power Purse that conjured up an assortment of chemical gadgets and defenses. Well, a devoted dad named Alex wanted to ensure his daughter, Mia, had the complete costume experience, which meant she needed her very own Chem-Ball Purse.
Determined to take his daughter to Comic-Con and give her the ultimate Honey Lemon accessory, Alex decided to tackle this DIY project himself. With limited experience in crafting purses, he dedicated around 30 hours to complete the task, following 10 hours of YouTube tutorials to master the necessary skills.
The initial planning phase was the most challenging part for him, but once he got into the groove, he found it more manageable than expected. “Foam is both affordable and forgiving,” he noted, which turned out to be a big help throughout the process.
By the end of his efforts, Alex had created a stunning purse that not only lit up but also showcased a periodic table and had a compartment for the chem-balls, securely held in place with magnets until Mia needed them. When they arrived at Comic-Con, they were welcomed with open arms, as fellow attendees instantly recognized Mia as Honey Lemon. Many even asked to take pictures with her!
This heartwarming story highlights the joy of a happy child and a proud parent, while also calling attention to the toy industry’s ongoing challenge to provide diverse options for young girls. While there are action figures for all the main characters from Big Hero 6, including Honey Lemon, the industry still falls short on providing a wider range of action figures and accessories for girls beyond the ubiquitous princess themes.
This issue has been raised time and again, from the absence of a Black Widow action figure to the limited options for female characters in franchises like Star Wars. Perhaps Alex could connect with parents like Colin, who also wish for more varied toys for their daughters. Meanwhile, Alex is already brainstorming for next year’s Comic-Con, as Mia has her sights set on dressing up as Go Go Tomago.
