The Return of the Coneheads: A Timeless Humor for the Next Generation

Though their daughter, Tanya, has seemingly grown up and moved on, Beldar and Prymaat Conehead have made a comeback in a new State Farm commercial that feels oddly nostalgic. Sound familiar? It’s a humorous spin on the “State of Unrest” ad, complete with all the classic Coneheads charm.

Growing up on the early days of Saturday Night Live, I find this revival absolutely hilarious. It captures everything that made Coneheads sketches so enjoyable: a quintessential suburban backdrop, playful wordplay, and of course, references to “mass quantities.”

In celebration of Saturday Night Live’s 40th anniversary, I recently explored the show’s history and revisited many of the original sketches. I was only 9 when SNL first aired, and not exactly the intended audience, but I was hooked. My brother and I, who had our fair share of sibling squabbles, would stay up late to catch our favorite guests—Paul Simon was a personal favorite of mine even back then.

As the years passed, I drifted away from the show, feeling that the humor had waned and the cast was more prone to laughing at their own jokes. Yet, I found a new appreciation for it through the eyes of my 11-year-old son. While it was edgy for its time, I figured if I could enjoy it at 9, maybe he could at 11.

I was taken aback by how hard he laughed at a line that said, “You sound like a really attractive guy.” But the highlight for me was when he declared “The Wolverines,” the very first sketch to air on the inaugural night, to be absolutely hilarious. He might just be a refined little fellow, or perhaps he’s inherited my quirky sense of humor. Maybe both.

Now, I have a son who enthusiastically walks around shouting “Cheeburger cheeburger!” and I couldn’t be happier. Once he learns about Julia Child, I’ve got another classic sketch lined up for him.
