Growing up on the early days of Saturday Night Live, I find this revival absolutely hilarious. It captures everything that made Coneheads sketches so enjoyable: a quintessential suburban backdrop, playful wordplay, and of course, references to “mass quantities.”
In celebration of Saturday Night Live’s 40th anniversary, I recently explored the show’s history and revisited many of the original sketches. I was only 9 when SNL first aired, and not exactly the intended audience, but I was hooked. My brother and I, who had our fair share of sibling squabbles, would stay up late to catch our favorite guests—Paul Simon was a personal favorite of mine even back then.
As the years passed, I drifted away from the show, feeling that the humor had waned and the cast was more prone to laughing at their own jokes. Yet, I found a new appreciation for it through the eyes of my 11-year-old son. While it was edgy for its time, I figured if I could enjoy it at 9, maybe he could at 11.

He might just be a refined little fellow, or perhaps he’s inherited my quirky sense of humor. Maybe both.
Now, I have a son who enthusiastically walks around shouting “Cheeburger cheeburger!” and I couldn’t be happier. Once he learns about Julia Child, I’ve got another classic sketch lined up for him.
