A surprise photo shoot led to one of the most touching pregnancy announcements ever captured on camera.
Is there anything more heartwarming than witnessing the moment a parent-to-be discovers they’re expecting? We’ve all seen those priceless reactions from dads during similar surprises, and this one is no exception. When Laura Thompson found out she was pregnant with her first child with husband Jake, she wanted to share the news in a memorable way.
Laura collaborated with her friend from high school, photographer Emma Richards. Together, they devised a clever plan at Lakeview Park near Chicago, Illinois.
“The whole announcement concept was Laura’s brainchild,” Richards shared with us. “We meticulously planned the photo shoot right down to the moment she would reveal her exciting news. Jake thought they were simply there to enjoy a photoshoot, and he was already thrilled about that.”
“He had no inkling of what was coming. I even fabricated a fake email congratulating them on winning the shoot, so he wouldn’t suspect a thing!”
During the session, Richards prompted both Laura and Jake to jot down three qualities they admire about each other on small chalkboards. Jake wrote, “funny, kind, and adventurous,” while Laura wrote, “You’re going to be a dad.”
The camera captured the exact moment Jake read Laura’s chalkboard and processed her words. Get ready for the tears!
“The look on his face was unforgettable!” Richards recalled. “When Laura flipped her chalkboard around, it took Jake a few seconds to fully understand what it said. He was looking for three words that described Laura, but instead, he read ‘You’re going to be a dad.’”
What followed was a beautiful mix of hugs and joyful tears from both parents-to-be.
“It was one of the most incredible moments I’ve ever witnessed, and I’m so grateful we could pull it off,” Richards added. “Laura had kept the news from Jake for a long four days, so you can imagine the excitement she felt leading up to this moment.”
