Farewell to Stilettos: Embracing Comfort as a Priority

When I first graduated from medical school, I treated myself to a lavish pair of strappy heels. They were undoubtedly the most eye-catching shoes in my wardrobe — tall, sleek, and adorned with glittering accents. They commanded attention in the best way possible. However, they were also incredibly painful, turning my feet into a battleground of discomfort. Despite their torturous nature, I wore them frequently. After all, what’s the point of youth if not to endure a little pain for the sake of fashion?

My best friend jokingly dubbed them “look at me” shoes — not just for their allure but for the exclamations of frustration they often inspired from me throughout the night. These stilettos embodied the carefree impracticality of my early adulthood. Blisters, sore arches, and the risk of a twisted ankle were mere trifles. I was determined to look fabulous at any cost.

Fast forward 15 years, and after welcoming a couple of children into my life, those shoes have become relics of the past. Now, when I’m racing to catch up with toddlers or scrambling to make it to school pickup, comfort has become a non-negotiable necessity.

The transformation of a woman can often be illustrated through the evolution of her footwear. One moment, we’re teetering in knee-high boots with stiletto heels, and the next, we’re slipping into cozy Crocs for a grocery run. In our youthful days, we easily splurged on designer shoes and accumulated countless pairs of heels, including obligatory red and gold options. However, once we grasp the true costs of raising children, we quickly pivot to more budget-friendly choices, like Keds from discount stores.

Initially, we strut around in alluring stilettos, but eventually, we find ourselves gravitating toward more practical footwear like flats and slippers. Sure, we may attempt to stay trendy with wedge espadrilles, but the reality of carrying a child often tips us off balance. Eventually, we reach a breaking point, realizing that the discomfort simply isn’t worth it. Enter comfortable, sensible shoes.

Danskos and classic flats become staples in our daily lives. While Danskos might not win any fashion awards and flats can feel decidedly bland, they allow us to navigate parenting chaos with ease. We can effortlessly slip them on while juggling a squirming baby and helping a toddler with their mismatched shoes. And let’s be honest, sometimes I prefer to go completely shoeless, especially when dropping off the kids at school. Nothing screams “I have other priorities” quite like sporting slippers at drop-off — a habit I may or may not indulge in regularly.

This isn’t to say we’ve abandoned high heels entirely. We still don fabulous pumps and stylish knee-high boots for special occasions because, despite being busy, we still know how to showcase our flair. The difference is that now we wear those trendy shoes for our own enjoyment rather than to impress others.

I still have a soft spot for a stunning pair of shoes, but there comes a time in every woman’s life when we opt for sturdy, empowering footwear over delicate stilettos. Strong shoes imbue us with confidence and resilience, whether they’re sparkling or cozy, tall or flat. Their appearance matters less than their comfort, because truly, who has time for uncomfortable shoes when life demands our attention?
