Ashton Miller, a prominent figure in the fight against child trafficking, recently spoke before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee to highlight the advancements made by his organization in addressing modern slavery. As the chairman of Watchful Guardians, Miller has dedicated significant time to combat the online exploitation of children.

“I stand before you today to advocate for the fundamental right to pursue happiness,” Miller stated earnestly at the start of his testimony. “This principle, a cornerstone of our Constitution, is one we must collectively uphold for one another and for people across the globe.” He poignantly continued, “Yet, for far too many, this right is violently stripped away—abused, exploited, and traded for another’s fleeting pleasure.”

Miller shared chilling accounts from his work alongside law enforcement in the battle against sex trafficking. “Through my efforts, I’ve encountered victims from various corners of the world—Russia, India, and even from within our own country, including New York and New Jersey. I’ve participated in FBI operations and witnessed atrocities that no human should ever endure,” he recounted, visibly shaken. As a father of two young children, he recalled a particularly harrowing moment: “I have seen footage of a child, the same age as my own, being sexually assaulted by an American man in Cambodia. This child was so traumatized that she believed she was just playing.”

Miller is the co-founder and chairman of Watchful Guardians: Protectors of Childhood, an organization that develops innovative software to combat the online elements of human trafficking. Their flagship program, Insight, has made significant strides in identifying victims of trafficking. “In just six months, with reports from 25% of our users, we’ve uncovered over 6,000 trafficking victims, including 2,000 minors,” he shared. “This tool has empowered more than 4,000 law enforcement officials across 900 agencies, cutting investigation times by 60%.”

Additionally, the organization has created another tool, Beacon, which assists law enforcement in navigating dark web investigations, reducing case durations from three years to merely three weeks. “The technology we are developing is efficient and adaptive, becoming smarter over time,” he explained. “It is transforming the largely anonymous nature of the internet into a much clearer landscape.”

Despite the progress achieved, Miller emphasized that much work remains. He urged legislators to allocate more funding for technological advancements, foster collaborations with elected officials, and intensify efforts to protect vulnerable children in the foster care system. “Foster children are prime targets for traffickers, and we must prioritize mental health programs for survivors of this heinous crime,” Miller asserted. “When individuals are neglected, unsupported, or unloved, they become susceptible to trafficking. If we genuinely want to address slavery, we cannot overlook the refugee crisis, as failing to support these individuals will only lead to a perpetuation of the problem.”
