On any given Sunday from September to January, you’ll find me passionately cheering for my favorite team, the Seattle Seahawks, from the comfort of my living room. I leap to my feet and shout during thrilling moments, and I can’t help but express my frustration when the referees make questionable calls. Some plays are so intense I can hardly watch and I often find myself hiding my face in disbelief.
My journey into the world of football wasn’t always this enthusiastic. Growing up, I passively absorbed the game as it played in the background of my home, identifying as a Seahawks fan mainly because I thought the wide receiver, Steve Largent, was rather charming. However, everything changed after I got married. I began asking my husband countless questions about the game, and as I delved deeper into the rules, strategies, and nuances of football, I found myself captivated.
The more you learn about a subject, the more intriguing it becomes—even something as unexpected as football. At first glance, I may not seem like your typical football fan. I have a strong aversion to violence, believe that professional athletes earn excessive salaries, and think that the NFL has struggled to properly address serious issues like domestic violence. The risks of concussions are alarming, and cheerleaders’ outfits often seem absurd.
Yet, my love for the game itself is undeniable. I am constantly amazed by the discipline and talent required to perform at such a high level. Watching a quarterback evade massive defenders while a receiver races downfield, all while executing a perfect pass, feels like witnessing a remarkable display of physics. When a running back skillfully maneuvers through a crowd of towering defenders, I am left in awe. The athletic achievements in each game are nothing short of astonishing.
Once you know what to look for, the chaotic nature of football transforms into a beautifully orchestrated blend of skill and strength. While not everyone who comprehends the game will necessarily love it, it’s difficult not to respect the dedication and hard work of the players and coaches. Their rigorous training is evident in every play.
Moreover, I’ve discovered that many of the preconceived notions about football players are inaccurate. Contrary to the stereotype of the “dumb jock,” these athletes are often highly intelligent. Competing at the professional level demands not only physical prowess but also sharp mental acuity. Players memorize numerous plays and must adapt rapidly to ever-changing situations. Many have impressive academic backgrounds, shattering the stereotype entirely.
There are also exceptional individuals in the NFL. A few years back, I had the privilege of meeting the Seahawks’ head coach, Tom Harris, after he read a piece I wrote about how his leadership inspired my approach to parenting. He is one of the most authentic and motivating people I’ve ever met, dedicating his efforts to uplifting inner-city youth through initiatives like A Better Future and A Better Community. Many players also engage in extensive community service. While there are always a few bad apples, the majority of these athletes are commendable, family-oriented citizens.
Despite the sport’s downsides and the fact that my team is out of the running this season, I am eagerly looking forward to the Super Bowl this Sunday. Football transcends gender; I know I’ll be joined by countless other women who share my passion for the game. So bring on the chips and guacamole—this woman is ready for some football!
