A Call to My Fellow Citizens Who Advocate Against Funding for Planned Parenthood

A few years back, I was driving past a Planned Parenthood facility in my community while heading to meet a friend for a day outdoors. As I passed, I noticed groups on either side of the road, each displaying signs and chanting fervently. On one side stood those who identified as “pro-life,” vehemently denouncing anyone entering the clinic for abortions (despite the fact that this particular location does not perform abortions), while on the other side were advocates highlighting the critical services offered by Planned Parenthood.

I must admit, I felt a surge of frustration. It wasn’t just the blatant misinformation being shouted by the protestors; it was their swift condemnation of an organization that plays an invaluable role in providing healthcare to countless individuals.

To those who oppose Planned Parenthood based on their stance on abortion and the unfounded claims of selling fetal tissue, I urge you: Educate yourself.

If Planned Parenthood were to be defunded in this misguided crusade, where would the hundreds of thousands of individuals who rely on their services turn? Research indicates that as many as 650,000 women could lose access to essential health care options, particularly in low-income areas.

Educate yourself.

It’s crucial to recognize that only 3% of the services provided by Planned Parenthood pertain to abortion. The organization is primarily focused on delivering critical health services such as contraceptive access, sexually transmitted infection testing and treatment, breast examinations, Pap smears, prostate and colon cancer screenings, and more. For example, in 2014 alone, Planned Parenthood clinics provided vasectomies to 3,445 men.

You might say, “But what about the videos claiming they sell baby parts? That’s just wrong!” However, investigations by reputable organizations, including NPR, have uncovered no evidence supporting these allegations against Planned Parenthood.

Educate yourself.

The consequences of your uninformed viewpoint can be damaging. In communities where women depend on Planned Parenthood for Medicaid-supported contraceptive services, a rise in unintended pregnancies could lead to increased strain on Medicaid resources. It’s estimated that defunding Planned Parenthood could increase Medicaid costs by $650 million over the next decade. Ultimately, taxpayers will bear this financial burden.

So, once more, I implore you: Educate yourself. Seek reliable, fact-based information from trusted sources like The New York Times, CNN, or Washington Post. Avoid being misled by faith-based or ultra-conservative outlets that distort the facts to gain control over women’s health decisions.

As the Harvard Civil Rights-Civil Liberties Law Review aptly states, “By taking a hard stance on abortion at the expense of women’s access to health care, conservatives are making a value judgment. They are telling women that our health is not as important as their statement against abortion and their views on what we should do with our bodies.”

Educate yourself.
