Dear Secretary of Education,

I am reaching out to you as both a parent and a physician, compelled by the urgent need to address the troubling rise in violence and discrimination affecting our children—particularly those from Latino, African-American, Asian, and Muslim backgrounds. The recent reports of racial slurs, assaults, and other forms of intimidation in schools are alarming. We have witnessed chants invoking division and acts of aggression that leave lasting scars on young minds.

It is imperative that you implement a school-wide mandate promoting a zero-tolerance policy towards all forms of prejudice, bullying, and violence. Educators should be encouraged to organize assemblies focusing on respect and acceptance, equipping students with the tools to respond to aggression. Schools must actively communicate safety protocols to parents and host discussions that foster a culture of inclusivity.

As a mother of biracial children, I cannot afford to remain passive while incidents of hate occur. It is crucial that we take proactive measures to instill a sense of safety and belonging in our schools. While we may not be able to prevent every negative encounter, we can certainly reduce their frequency through decisive action.

Our educational institutions should be sanctuaries where every child feels empowered to express their identity and celebrate their differences. It is unjust to place the burden of navigating hatred on children who are not yet equipped to handle such experiences emotionally.

Time is of the essence. With each passing day, more children are vulnerable to harm. I have already communicated with school principals and superintendents, and I aim to connect with fellow parents to strengthen our collective voice. We must act swiftly; there is no room for delay.

I urge you to take immediate action.

Sincerely,

Dr. Emily Lawson
