An Open Letter to Bruce Jenner

Dear Bruce Jenner,

I want to start by saying that I don’t know you personally. My youth didn’t afford me the chance to witness your remarkable Olympic triumphs. I haven’t kept up with your film or racing ventures, and I’ve never tuned into your family’s reality show—reality TV just isn’t my cup of tea. But since your interview with Diane Sawyer, where you revealed your transition to living as a woman, you certainly have my attention now.

While I can’t claim to fully grasp your experiences, we do share a common thread: we are both human beings navigating this complex world, each seeking our own paths to happiness. Sometimes, achieving that happiness demands significant struggles and transformations.

I can relate to your journey more than you may realize; my own father is also a woman. Nearly two decades ago, during a family gathering, my father confided in me about her identity. To say it took me by surprise would be an understatement. However, I responded with love and support as she began to embrace her true self. Over the years, I’ve walked alongside her on this transformative journey from male to female.

Your path resonates with me, albeit minus the accolades and fame. I wholeheartedly support both her and you.

Many have asked if having a transgender parent is strange. Initially, it was a bit unnerving as I navigated the use of pronouns and grappled with the feeling of losing my father. I had my own adjustments to make, yet I discovered that it’s possible to love and support someone while working through your own challenges.

Today, I rarely think about it. My father, now living as Josephine, has embraced her identity and found happiness. That alone brings me joy.

However, when Josephine transitioned, we lacked visible role models outside the transgender community. We had to chart our own course without the reassurance of prominent examples indicating that everything would turn out fine.

Fortunately, times are changing, and you and your family play a vital role in that evolution.

I felt a swell of pride when I saw your children publicly praising your courage. Their heartfelt messages of love and encouragement moved me to tears. They are proud of you, and so am I. And even though I’m not a fan of certain celebrities, I appreciated your story about Kim and Kanye discussing the importance of being true to oneself. If Kanye can grasp this concept, we should all be able to embrace our authentic selves.

Regardless of our differences, I stand with you in your quest to live an authentic life. You hold a unique position to advocate for acceptance and understanding in society. The very public scrutiny you face can indeed transform into a powerful tool for positive change.

As you continue your transition, know that you will encounter intense observation. But with the unwavering support of your family and a growing community of allies, I hope you navigate this journey with pride and confidence.

You mentioned your fear of disappointing others. While you may not have been referring to me, I want to share that far from disappointing me, your courage has inspired me. I am proud of you, and I’m grateful for your journey. On behalf of myself and my family, I extend my support as you continue to pave the way for change in the world.

With warm regards,
Emily, a fellow human being

P.S. I can’t wait to address you by your new name when you’re ready! xoxo
