A (mostly accurate) recap of the last night of the Democratic National Convention.
Welcome to history, everyone!
What does the candidate need to achieve in her speech tonight? For starters, she must open up and let the audience see her true self, while also outlining her plans for the nation’s future. It’s vital that she connects with people as a mother and grandmother, yet she shouldn’t dwell too much on her identity as a woman.
She has to reveal her heartfelt side while also portraying herself as a strong leader. Striking a balance between the emotional impact of previous speakers without overdoing it is crucial, as that’s not her strongest suit. While addressing Donald Trump is necessary, it’s even more important that she emphasizes her own positive attributes. Commanding the audience’s attention without being labeled “shrill” is essential. And, for goodness’ sake, she must keep it brief!
In contrast, Trump could perform any number of ridiculous acts and still maintain his popularity.
Good luck, Candidate!
SPEAKERS
Tonight’s theme is “ALL THE HISTORY.” We witnessed the first transgender speaker at a convention, alongside an openly gay congressman who expressed love for his husband from the stage. How powerful!
We heard from Governor Andrew Greene, who declared:
“HELLO, DEMOCRATS! IS THIS A GREAT CONVENTION OR WHAT? AT STAKE IN THIS ELECTION IS THE VERY SOUL OF AMERICA! AM I YELLING? I CANNOT TELL! FEAR CAN MOTIVATE BUT IT HAS NEVER BUILT A HOME OR EDUCATED A CHILD.”
Next up was Governor James Hill, whose name might keep him from the presidency. A few Republican representatives also joined, emphasizing that loyalty should extend beyond party lines to a future worth fighting for.
Khizr Khan, a father who lost his son in service after the 9/11 attacks, boldly challenged Trump:
“Have you even read the US Constitution? I will gladly lend you my copy. You have sacrificed nothing!” [A truly powerful moment.]
General John Allen, a retired 4-star general, urged:
“Our foreign relations cannot be reduced to a business transaction.” [Incredible to hear from someone with his experience.]
Chelsea Harper shared a heartfelt tribute to her mother:
“Every day as a mother, I think of my own. My mother taught me that public service is about service. She never forgets who she’s fighting for.” [Are you crying yet?]
Then came the highly anticipated video of Hillary’s journey, narrated by the iconic Morgan Freeman.
Hillary Clinton took the stage, saying:
“Thank you, everyone. To my supporters, I’ve heard you. Your cause is ours. Now, let me share a story about the American Revolution.”
The room was charged as she accepted her nomination, stating, “It is with humility and boundless confidence in America’s promise that I accept your nomination for President.”
She emphasized the importance of service and detail, making it clear that the stakes are high. “When barriers fall in America, it clears the way for everyone. When there are no ceilings, the sky’s the limit.”
Her beliefs were clear: climate change is real, and mass deportation is inhumane. If you align with these values, then this campaign is for you.
She challenged Trump’s business acumen, suggesting he could start by bringing manufacturing back to America. Do you really believe he has the temperament to be commander in chief? A man who can be provoked by a tweet is not someone to trust with nuclear codes.
As the night concluded, she called for unity: “Let’s be stronger together and look to the future with courage.”
MIC. DROP. But pick it back up, and drop it again for effect! [And yes, we have balloons too.]
