As summer rolls in, many families are gearing up for their beach outings. However, taking young children to the beach can feel as stressful as enduring a dental procedure while simultaneously getting a bikini wax.
Last year, I reached my breaking point with the chaos, but the kids continued their incessant noise. This year, I decided to leverage my medical background to create a beach experience that embraces what I like to call “Creative Parenting.” So what does this entail? It’s all about cleverly integrating your kids into another family’s beach fun while you take a well-deserved break.
Here’s how to master the art of Creative Parenting:
- Choose a spot near a notable landmark, whether it’s a lifeguard tower, a “Danger” sign, or one of those massive sun shelters that could serve as temporary housing. Point these out to your kids, making it easier for them to find you once the other family decides to pack up and leave—trust me, they will when they notice what’s going on.
- Position yourself close to a family that’s engrossed in digging a hole. Whether they’re trying to reach China or simply creating a spacious pit, it doesn’t matter. The key is that the hole must be dug by a father and his children; dads tend to get fixated on their projects, often digging deeper and wider, while moms might not share that same level of obsession.
- Every 30 minutes or so, make a quick visit to your child to apply sunscreen while suggesting they return to the blanket for some math practice or perhaps a healthy snack of edamame.
- Be sure to wave at the other parents at least once, give a nonchalant shrug, and silently mouth the words, “They love you!” Follow that with an expression that conveys a mix of apology and amusement.
- Strategically drop off snacks, juice boxes, and beach toys at the edge of the hole—creating a mini-market that keeps your kids entertained and prevents them from returning prematurely. As you stroll back to your chair, casually mention to the dad, “Great job! I’ll be over here browsing Guinness World Records for the deepest beach excavation. Internet’s been lagging today, though.”
By implementing these strategies, you’ll find yourself with ample time to read, play games, or simply enjoy soaking up the sun. Enjoy your beach day!

In summary, Creative Parenting at the beach allows for a unique blend of relaxation and clever parenting. With strategic planning and a little creativity, you can enjoy your time while ensuring your kids have a blast.
